Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve lived in my English Basement for about 3 years now and I’ve never had an issue with bugs/insects. Over the past 2-3 weeks I have seen a significant increase in the number of houseflies. I’ve purchased window fly strips, a sticky fly wand and one of those “Fly Bags” you fill with water and put it outside my house. The issue continues to persist and I cannot find the source of the issue. Do you have any other tips on how to remove the flies? I’m catching at least 30 a day. Is this something that will subside after the summer months or does anyone have any success stories?”

“Dear PoPville,

Am I the only one who finds this a little cringe?

I get their heart is in the “right place,” but I feel this is capitalizing on a movement and for a brand “trying to get some good name recognition.” This all seems like a marketing ploy of like “performative activism” to get people in the door and then pressure them to get a membership.”

Ed. Note: Yesterday there were 13,684 total positives.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“The District’s reported data for Tuesday, August 25, 2020 includes 38 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 13,722.

The District reported 1 additional COVID-19 related death.

Tragically, 605 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The community spread chart is subject to fluctuation because the data is based on symptom onset date. As national demand for testing increases and results take longer to come back in DC and across the country, DC Health has identified a need to increase the reporting lag time by four days to reduce volatility in the data. The most recent data reflects an increase in community spread. To ensure this graph accurately reflects the most recent data, the community spread count is being paused as these adjustments are made.” (more…)

Ed. Note: The BBQ Bus Smokehouse opened here back in 2017.

From the BBQ Bus:

“WE’LL RISE AGAIN

A couple of years ago someone asked what I did for work.

“I ring up customers at the register.”

I was being somewhat glib. Small business owners have boundary issues and find ourselves doing everything. Big to small. Most important to least. Whenever possible at the least convenient times.

I was, however, scheduled to work the register that day.

The inquirer stared. She pressed:

“What do you really do?”

I blanked out. I stared back. Then I blurted: “I gather and nourish.”

She paused.

“What does that mean?”

“Food’s job is to gather people for sharing. I facilitate that. And when I was small and my Dad said grace, he asked God that the food we eat nourish not just our bodies but our souls. So I help with that too.”

I don’t know where those words came from. At the time BBQ Bus was 7 year old, but it was the first time I understood what it was that I really did for a living.

There have always been challenges living this call to service; from when we were aspiring-but-broke entrepreneurs, to our early years navigating regulations, to growing and learning how to operationalize.

But today feels different. (more…)
