Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

I’m planning on voting in-person on Election Day. Wasn’t able to get a mail in ballot on time and can’t swing early voting. If the polling place opens at 7, any advice on what time I should arrive to not wait too long in line once they’re open? I’d be going to the polling station near Union Market and was thinking of arriving around 6 but might have to be earlier. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

my son is going to start day care on Friday before my wife goes back to work on Monday. I’ve taken the day off so we can sort of ease each other’s nerves. Now, in ordinary times, we would pull on some non-sweat pants, go somewhere to have a few drinks, and have a conversation uninterrupted by silly dancing, noise-making, book-reading, and other means of keeping a baby entertained that usually define our days. But there’s a pandemic on and the weather is going to be unpleasant on Friday. Does anyone know of a place where we can safely pass some time, preferably with a bar, preferably outdoors, preferably out of the rain, and preferably in the vicinity of a space heater? (high of 54 on Friday…)

We’d be grateful for any guidance the community could offer.”

Thanks to Mary Ann for sharing from All Souls Unitarian Church:

“All Souls is home to A Pantry for All Souls, a Little Free Pantry where neighbors can pick up grocery goods donated by other neighbors. The pantry is stocked by all of us, for all of us.

We need volunteers to help keep the pantry in good working condition–sign up here if you can help. No donation is necessary to volunteer.

If you need anything in the pantry, go ahead and take it!

If you’d like to donate to the pantry, you can put donations directly into the pantry at any time. If you can’t make it to the pantry in person, you can order from our Amazon Wishlist–select “Little Free Pantry” as your shipping address and it will be sent to our volunteer who stores extra supplies. Don’t do this

From Zero Waste DC:

“Despite being healthy and nutritious, only about one-fifth of the pumpkins grown each fall end up eaten. But pumpkins have a life after Halloween! Don’t waste them. Turn them into something useful without adding to the waste stream.

The Department of Public Works’ Food Waste Drop-off Program is teaming up with local food charities and organizations to recover leftover pumpkins for composting. Beginning Saturdays, October 31 through November 14; Sundays November 1 through November 15 and Wednesdays November 4 through November 18, residents can bring their leftover pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns to participating farmers’ markets throughout the District.

Together, we can reduce food waste and help create a greener future for our city! (more…)

Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.

The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.

metro

From WMATA:

“What’s in a name? When it comes to Metro stations, a lot. Station names are important to riders finding their way on the system, and they foster a “sense of place,” often serving as the primary landmark and name for surrounding neighborhoods. However, if a Metro station name is no longer serving its intended purpose, a city or county can ask Metro to consider changing it.

Metro has received two formal requests–one from Fairfax County and one from Prince George’s County–to change the name of a Metro station within their jurisdiction. (more…)
