From a press release:

“Bar Roubaix is throwing a month-long fete for fans of Cajun flavors, king cakes, second lines, and fleurs-de-lis, with Sim’s Creole Kitchen. Located at 1400 Irving Street, NW, in Columbia Heights, the pop-up kitchen opens this week and will feature classic creole cuisine from the family recipes of New Orleans Chef Sim Bates.

Chef Sim’s cooking is meant to warm you up and stick to your ribs. Guests can expect Red Beans & Rice, traditional and vegetarian Jambalaya, Grilled Oysters, and of course Grandma Bates Gumbo, with small plate options throughout.

“My food is a celebration of life from my Mississippi and New Orleans roots.” says Chef Sim. “When my grandmother and mother were in the kitchen, they were like magicians to me, and I had the awesome opportunity to learn from them — and taste every delicious creation before the rest of the family!” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

in light of today’s post regarding the assault of the dog walker, I wanted to share what happened to my friend earlier this week, as they might be related.

Around 11 a.m. on Wednesday 1/16, while walking in Columbia Heights, my friend was pulled into an alleyway at the corner of Sherman Ave. and Irving St. NW by two male assailants, who covered her mouth and threatened to stab her if she did not keep quiet. The men were incredibly violent as they stole her bag and patted her down for any other possessions, ultimately pushing her down a set of cement basement stairs and breaking her leg. (more…)

11th and Park Road, NW

Thanks to all who messaged me yesterday. We recently spoke about this prospect last week. The Columbia Heights Dog Park opened here back in 2009. Some neighbors have been trying to fight the sale/encourage D.C. to purchase the property since January of last year. Updates as warranted.

From WMATA:

“Metro today announced that eight surplus properties are up for sale in Maryland, Virginia and the District with potential for commercial, residential and/or mixed-use development. The parcels include several sites near or adjacent to Metro stations, including Columbia Heights, College Park, and Glenmont.

The sale of surplus property is expected to save money by reducing maintenance expenses on property Metro no longer needs, while generating additional revenue for capital and operating expenses. (more…)

Update from ANC Christine Miller:

“Some have asked about work happening at 14th & Monroe. Sorry to disappoint, but there won’t be a resurrection of TGIF. Alterations & repair are for Children’s National Primary Care. Now I can just run my
kids down the block the next time one breaks!”

Thanks to Paul for sending:

“Maybe this means movement of some kind? TGIFridays back from the dead?”

TGIFriday’s last D.C. location closed in Foggy Bottom back in October.

Ah the prospect of TGIF in Columbia Heights… (more…)
