Ed. Note: An arrest has now been made.

“Dear PoPville,

Our 69 yr old dog walker was brutally beat by two men with a pipe yesterday 1/17 in the 1400 block of Euclid Street, NW at approx. 1pm. They supposedly were trying to steal her car, but she resisted as it had two of her dogs in it. That is when they beat her until a good Samaritan scared them away. She survived luckily and is in Howard Hospital recovering from head wounds and concussion. She is such an amazing women and she has walking dogs in our neighborhood for years.

We are are reaching out as the two individuals were not caught and there is not a lot of information on them. Any tips can be sent to Stuart Emerman, Commander Third District ([email protected]).

11th and Park Road, NW

Thanks to all who messaged me yesterday. We recently spoke about this prospect last week. The Columbia Heights Dog Park opened here back in 2009. Some neighbors have been trying to fight the sale/encourage D.C. to purchase the property since January of last year. Updates as warranted.

From WMATA:

“Metro today announced that eight surplus properties are up for sale in Maryland, Virginia and the District with potential for commercial, residential and/or mixed-use development. The parcels include several sites near or adjacent to Metro stations, including Columbia Heights, College Park, and Glenmont.

The sale of surplus property is expected to save money by reducing maintenance expenses on property Metro no longer needs, while generating additional revenue for capital and operating expenses. (more…)

Ed. Note: PoPville is not affiliated with any rental properties, those selected simply catch my eye. Rent at your own risk and proceed with caution as you would with all Craigslist listings.

This rental is located at 3146 16th Street NW at Irving. The Craigslist ad says:

14th and Monroe Street, NW

Update from ANC Christine Miller:

“Some have asked about work happening at 14th & Monroe. Sorry to disappoint, but there won’t be a resurrection of TGIF. Alterations & repair are for Children’s National Primary Care. Now I can just run my
kids down the block the next time one breaks!”

Thanks to Paul for sending:

“Maybe this means movement of some kind? TGIFridays back from the dead?”

TGIFriday’s last D.C. location closed in Foggy Bottom back in October.

Ah the prospect of TGIF in Columbia Heights… (more…)

“Dear Popville,

I’ve been following the dismayed reaction to the news that the 11th Street dog park is now for sale and I have some questions.

1. How did anyone not see this coming from miles away? WMATA properties must, by law, be disposed of at market rate. The dog park is zoned as MU-4, is over 7,000 square feet and sits directly in the middle of a high density, high value corridor. It was never going to be worth anything less than $2,000,000. And guess what, the opening bid for the property is now a minimum of $2.1 million. So remember that $1.5 million that the Council voted on to ‘save the park’? Yeah…that was never really a thing that was going to work. You should think about whether or not that’s why it passed.

2. Did anyone think about the propriety of spending public money for this use relative to what the overall needs of Ward 1 are? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Has anyone heard details of the shooting that took place around 4:45/5am this morning on 16th and Columbia? We think it may have been near the All Souls Church. We live in the Argonne and woke up to 4 distinct gunshots. Shortly after, cop cars pulled up and my wife saw police interviewing a possible witness. They didn’t stay long and all returned to normal.”

Aha!! A few weeks ago we noted that it looked like a new restaurant was coming to the former Creme space on 14th. And indeed one is – it’s gonna be Rooster & Owl. Despite the fact that the name will obviously be savaged in the comments, [Ed. Note: Personally as a fan of both roosters and owls, I’m rather keen on the name] this sounds very very promising. Their website says: (more…)
