“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping you can help resolve my confusion over what’s happening at Chix’s 14th Street location. I went there to grab dinner at 8pm on Thursday night (they close at 9:30), but the lights were off and the doors were locked (sorry – forgot to take a pic). However, there was no sign explaining what was up, nor were there any updates to their website, FB page, or Twitter feed. They appear to have been closed ever since. I’ve tried calling both that location and the Navy Yard restaurant and emailed them as well, but I haven’t received an answer. Anyone know what’s going on? I really hope the closure isn’t permanent!”

Ed. Note: Chix’s 14th Street location opened back in 2012. Their original 11th Street location closed back in December (now Charcoal Town.) I sent an email to inquire the status of 14th Street and have not yet heard back either. Updates when more is known.

13th and I Street, NW

The Best Sandwich Shop opened at 1776 I St, NW back in 2014 (and Georgetown before that) and if you’re incredibly lazy, you’re in luck! I’m just kidding that is a legit far four blocks if you’re an office worker just looking for a quick bite. This spot is opening across from Franklin Square. I love the name – any fans of the other locations? You can see their sandwich menu here.

Discreetly tucked under Mindful Restaurant Group’s sister restaurant Ghibellina, hidden gem Sotto originally opened in March 2015, and over the last 2 years has become a popular stop on the busy 14th street strip thanks to its sleek and stylish setting, creative cocktail program, and diverse line-up of local musicians. With the launch of the new menu and dining room refresh, Sotto looks forward becoming one of the most sought after spaces to enjoy a vibrant dining experience while listening to live music. (more…)

Thanks to Matt for sending: “Yikes! Closure at Thai Xing. Hopefully they open again soon.” Can anyone find the health report? I saw some disturbing video on a Facebook post and I think, if you saw it, you’d agree this was a good thing while the restaurant is treated. These are great people and so many restaurants have these issues – also hoping they are able to reopen again soon!

1020 19th Street, NW just north of K Street

I’m not wasting any more beer by pouring it out for 19th Street. No more! Oy this has been a horrible 24 hours. Thanks to a reader for sending:

“I got news this morning from the owner that my beloved downtown breakfast and lunch spot is permanently closing as of today. Café Carvy at 19th and K St was THE office go-to for breakfast sandwiches, the best iced coffee (with coffee ice cubes!), and fresh carved turkey and roast beef for lunch. Always a great value and really friendly service. My officemates and I are extremely devastated.”

Cafe Carvy opened in the old Spice Indian Bistro space back in 2012.

Dagger. Dagger, dagger, dagger. So much for those two steps forward. At least the powers that be have preserved their precious service lane…for now. JFC. There is no spinning this, this is terrible. Thanks to all who emailed last night. From Ripple’s brutal announcement:

“It is with great sadness that we will be closing Ripple later this month. Despite a great sense of pride and accomplishment for everything that our team has achieved over the last seven years, the reality of a slowing business means we will no longer be able to serve our guests in Cleveland Park. We will remain open through dinner service on June 24th, and hope you will be able to join us over the coming days to share another memorable meal with us, or perhaps a glass or two of wine at the bar. From a press release:

Franklin Hall, an American beer hall located at 1348 Florida Ave NW in the Manhattan Laundry building, is opening Friday, June 9, at 4pm.

Franklin Hall is an ode to Benjamin Franklin, America’s foremost investor and lover of beer, wine, and cider, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, the man who brought the cocktail back. The Manhattan Laundry building was built in 1877 and was originally used as a car barn for the Washington & Georgetown Railroad Company, before converting to a laundry in 1905. We are joining neighbors La Colombe, WeWork, Mothership Strategies, and the forthcoming Maydan.

The space is large, covering over 5,500 square feet, with long beer hall tables that fit 12-16 people and leather chesterfield couches throughout. We have a selection of table games available such as Jenga, Connect 4, card games, and more. Within Franklin Hall there are three areas purposefully designed for gatherings, which will accommodate groups of up to 30 people each. 24 taps are mirrored three times behind the 60-foot bar, with a walk-up kitchen located on the opposite side of the room. 20 taps are designated for beer, one for a draft cocktail, and three for draft wine. The food menu was designed by consulting Chef Matt Baker of Gravitas in Ivy City. Within the next month Franklin Hall will roll out a weekend brunch menu featuring all day breakfast tacos. (more…)

Can’t believe this was Radius!
