Thanks to Andy for sending: “what’s up with “Flip It LJ Diner” now with signage up on Park Road near Pho 14?”

This might be set a new record for “long time coming”! Back in August 2013 we first posted about Flip It coming to this space. In December 2014 they looked close to opening. Then crickets. Finally some new signage and Dear God please be a proper Diner. STAY TUNED.

A reader reports:

“I walked by El Rinconcito II over Memorial Day Weekend, and there were a couple guys going in and out with renovation/construction type equipment. I asked them when it was re-opening and they said, “next month!” — fingers crossed for sometime this June!”

El Rinconcito II suffered a terrible fire last October. There were initial hopes they’d reopen in April. Fingers now crossed for June!!

Ed. Note: This is the former Salt and Pepper Grill III (Indian) space and Chocolate Crust before that.

Almost forgot about this:

“The BBQ Bus Smokehouse will feature the well-loved smoky sandwiches and picnic plates served from the food truck since 2011 plus original additions created in honor of the surrounding Brightwood community, including a new Georgia Avenue Gold slow-smoked pulled pork sandwich.

Other dishes include soy and brown sugar brined chicken wings, baby back ribs, Angus brisket, choriozo mac and cheese, and bacon mashed potatoes.”

Stay tuned for an exact opening date.

Looks like the Andresification of Penn Quarter continues full steam ahead with PEPE Spanish Sandwiches. A reader reports the sign is “facing the Navy Memorial, in the building that 701 restaurant is in, where the native foods place was.”

Ed. Note: We judged Andres’ PEPE Food Truck here. Updates if it’s also becoming a brick and mortar. Stay tuned.

From an email:

“On Sunday, June 11, Toki Underground will partner with Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken to host a one-day-only collaboration pop-up at the H Street ramen shop. The restaurant, which is normally closed on Sundays, will open for the pop-up from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The special menu will feature collaborative dishes, like a black sesame glazed doughnut, scallion biscuits & tonkotsu with Kimchi cream cheese, and a Toki Monster doughnut, which is made with a bourbon and angostura glaze with cured and spiced bacon bits. The menu is available on a first come, first served basis while supplies last, and guests will have the option of enjoying in the restaurant or ordering for take-out. Full menu details with pricing can be seen below, and photos can be found here. The regular Toki Underground menu offerings will not be available during this time.

Additionally, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken will also sell the Toki Monster doughnut for $4 each at the G Street location only in limited quantities on Sunday, June 11. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for your time.

“Dear PoPville,

Any word on what’s going on at the Sala Thai in Petworth on Georgia? They’ve been changing it up, hopefully for the better?”

Thanks to Becka Wall‏ for sending the photo above: “Sala Thai on Georgia is rebranding to Pantry — their menus say they’re in transition!”

Stay tuned.

“Dear PoPville,

Just read this article [from Eater DC]:

The new neighborhood eatery is actually a longtime fixture in Florida, debuting in Boca Raton in 1985.

Named V & S Italian Deli, the originator was started by Sal Falcone and his brother just steps away from the beach.

Now, more than 20 years later, he’s convinced Falcone to install a second version of the mom-and-pop joint in the District — which Seligman believes is lacking in authentic Italian delis with fresh-baked breads.

and quickly realized that my hometown deli is coming to DC! Figured I’d pass the good news along, as a new quality food place is always welcome in Shaw. If this place can replicate what they do in Florida we are all in for a treat. Some of the best italian subs you will get anywhere. I haven’t been yet but am excited to try it ASAP!
