Cafe Carvy Closing on 19th Street

1020 19th Street, NW just north of K Street

I’m not wasting any more beer by pouring it out for 19th Street. No more! Oy this has been a horrible 24 hours. Thanks to a reader for sending:

“I got news this morning from the owner that my beloved downtown breakfast and lunch spot is permanently closing as of today. Café Carvy at 19th and K St was THE office go-to for breakfast sandwiches, the best iced coffee (with coffee ice cubes!), and fresh carved turkey and roast beef for lunch. Always a great value and really friendly service. My officemates and I are extremely devastated.”

Cafe Carvy opened in the old Spice Indian Bistro space back in 2012.

On the plus side, there is something coming into the place next to GRK (I think it used to be the noodles and company). There are permits up and they were working yesterday. It looks like it’s close. I peaked in yesterday and they are working on the finishes. It’s all white tile with read tile accents. I also saw a sign that said Milkshakes. Maybe a Five Guys?

Was going to get a smoothie today, but saw it was closed. Bummer.

So many closings :( I wonder if we can blame Trump

This general area has some of the best lunch places in DC, so the competition is much tougher than elsewhere and I’m sure the rents aren’t cheap.

stop! WHAT? 19th st is great for restaurants! like, when was the last time one closed?

I loved the roast beef sandwiches there and would always stop by for lunch if I was in the area. R.I.P. Cafe Carvy,
you and your friendly staff will be fondly remembered.

If you are looking for a replacement, Atrium Cafe on the lower lobby level of the Washington Square Building (Connecticut and L) has fresh carved turkey, roast beef, and ham. They also have great bread and comprehensive topping options.
