Old Ralph Lauren Rugby at 1065 Wisconsin Ave, NW closed in 2013

Look, I understand Wawa is no Royal Farms but make no mistake, they have many fans for a reason. So, when my sources deep in Hoagie-ville have info to share, share I must. There is no question that a Wawa is coming to Georgetown (and many other neighborhoods), the question is where in Georgetown? At first I (and others) thought they were taking over the Restoration Hardware space at 1222 Wisconsin Ave, NW. Alas, other sources deep in the world of footwear tell me that, that space is now possibly becoming a Foot Locker. Another independent source in Hoagie-ville tells me that the old Rugby space across from the Paul Bakery (pictured above) will be home to the Wawa. Of course another source says that, that space will become a South Moon Under clothing store. So who the hell knows really? All I can say is STAY TUNED.

Ed. Note: This strip of 14th is also home to Red Derby, Lyman’s, Mezcalero, Taqueria Habanero as well as Quincy Liquor hoping to add a coffee option, not to mention French’s Cleaners and the bodega.

A reader reports:

“Delicia’s Market on 14th Street recently gutted half of the grocery store. I asked the cashier if they sold the space and what might be going in. She told me the rent was too high and that she needed to downsize. She also mentioned a Cuban restaurant was going in the empty space.

Update:

I spoke to the owner of the new Cuban restaurant coming in next to Delicia’s market. They’re aiming for a September 2017 opening! They are currently building out the roofdeck too!”

STAY TUNED.

At the risk of Wawa fatigue allow me one more because I got a million messages last night including this particularly good one from Petworth ANC Rep Amy Hemingway:

“As a WaWa loyalist and Petworth ANC commissioner on the lookout for economic development opportunities and more grab n’ go food options, I attended tonight’s WaWa event at the Newseum. Growth plan is ambitious and exciting. 30-50 stores in the pipeline once they get beyond their 5-year targets. While I am eager to see how the fancy flagship does at 1111 19th Street, NW, I’m more eager to follow their plans beyond the immediate growth areas. According to John Poplawski, WaWa’s Sr. Director of Site Acquisition & Development, two site selection factors are density and pedestrian traffic all day long. Metro stops are ideal. Let’s start a movement to prioritize the Georgia Ave-Petworth station area!

And thanks to Amy for including renderings of the 19th Street spot:

Back in February we first learned about Rito Loco’s roof deck plans. They’re really far along now. I’m told they could be open in just a few weeks if not sooner. Also stand by for an upgrade to their menu – I’m hearing paella could be in the mix. In the meantime – see how the deck is shaping up:

Check out the view after the jump. (more…)

In your best Oprah voice: You’re getting a Wawa, you’re getting a Wawa, you’re getting a Wawa and now the final reveal (that I have) Georgetown is getting a Wawa! This is from the same solid source who told us about the Chinatown and Logan Circle locations.

The Georgetown Metropolitan also heard the Restoration Hardware on Wisconsin would be a Wawa and concludes:

“It’s hard to call this anything but a regression for the neighborhood. Specifically a regression to the early 90s when this corner was occupied by a fast food restaurant…

First the 7-11. Now this. What do you call the opposite of gentrification?”

7th Street, NW just north of H

When it rains scuttlebutt it pours scuttlebutt! Another source with an incredibly high percentage of being right tells me that one of DC’s Wawa is coming to the space between Fado and Starbucks in Chinatown. S/He also confirms that one is coming to the former Tortilla Coast space in Logan Circle. They will join the one coming to 19th Street in the former City Sports space. And I got one more for ya too – STAY TUNED.

1414 9th Street, NW is the infamous former home to Vegetate, Cafe Eagle, Taqueria Mexicana, Eagle (again), Northern Restaurant and Secret Lounge and Sports Bar and most recently Chao Ku who abruptly closed in February. Fingers crossed for the IMM group!

Ed. Note: IMM on H is on H Street of course and IMM on Georgia is coming to Brightwood. You can see their menus here.

Will you make up your god danged mind 19th Street?!?!? Protein Bar closed here in March 2016. [Cafe Carvy closed across the street on Friday.] Well, now one of my finest falafel sources [s/he has a 98% accuracy rating] tells me that a Naf Naf Grill is probably taking over the space. Naf Naf’s website says:

“Naf Naf Grill is the premium destination for fresh, authentic Middle Eastern food. Oven baked pitas, hand cut salads, and freshly prepared sauces all served as an accompaniment to award-winning shawarma and falafel.”

Check out their menu here and STAY TUNED.
