Missed Connection – the 99 Northeast Regional train

“Dear PoPville,

I know this is a long shot and I’ve never done anything like this before, but… I wanted to try anyway.

We met on an amtrak train on July 5th. It was the 99 Northeast Regional train, and it left Philly at 2:45pm. We were both in Philly over the weekend visiting our respective friends. You had the window seat, and I asked if the seat next to you was free. You turned your focus to me and said yes. (And I thought you were a handsome stranger.) For most of the train ride we didn’t talk as you had headphones in, and I closed my eyes, sleeping in and out. We only talked during the last ~20 minutes before my stop when you made a sound, in-between a groan and a sigh and I asked, “Had a long weekend?” Our conversation continued when I asked another (more personal) question: (more…)

“Live music returns to Carter Barron Amphitheater”!!

“The gates to the Carter Barron Amphitheater will swing open to welcome audiences for three vibrant nights of music this summer. Though the storied amphitheater has been dormant for a decade, it will awaken from August 20 – 22 for Rock Creek Conservancy’s Summer in the Parks, a concert series in partnership with the DC Jazz Festival and Washington Performing Arts.

Summer in the Parks creates a unique opportunity for DC’s residents to peer beyond the gates into the historic venue. The sounds of DC will brighten the stage for just three nights, including the legendary JazzDC All-Stars, Sylver Logan Sharp, Black Alley, and Chester Burke Jr. & Company. (more…)

“I.M.P. joins the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) and the Fix the Tix Coalition in applauding the DC Council for unanimously giving final approval to The RESALE Act – landmark legislation that will establish one of the strongest and most comprehensive resale ticketing laws in the nation.

Championed by Councilmember Charles Allen, the legislation protects fans, artists, independent venues, theaters, comedy clubs, and festivals from deceptive ticket resale practices while ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and fairness throughout the ticket-buying process.

For years, scalpers, professional ticket resellers, and online resale platforms have driven up prices, misled consumers, and profited from deceptive practices that make it harder for fans across the District to access live entertainment. The RESALE Act addresses these abuses with a comprehensive package of reforms that puts fans first while strengthening Washington, D.C.’s independent live entertainment ecosystem.

“Dear PoPville,

‘Tis the season to complain about Pepco, but maybe something will be done if we all make a lot of noise? I keep my house between 75 and 78 degrees, and we received a bill for over $440! We do our best to be energy savvy this time of year (little to no cooking in the house, it’s grilling season!) we keep our blinds closed, all those kinds of things.

Today* in Hawks*** Around Town – Peregrine Falcon at the National Cathedral

“Details: Usually wary of cities, peregrine falcons were first seen in DC in the 90s yet it remains unusual to see one in the city. He isn’t nesting at the Cathedral; I saw & heard him the day before but not since. The Minotaur gargoyle represents a mythological half-man / half-bull; he is clutching a young human sacrificed to him. The gargoyle is near the top of the south west tower facing the Bishop’s Garden. It was designed by Jay Carpenter and carved by Cary Shafer.”
