Fried Chicken, waffles, sides, and draft cocktails from the upcoming Fancy Ranch pop-up by Chef Reid Shilling and Sara Quinteros Shilling. Photo by Farrah Skeiky.

From a press release:

Fancy Ranch Amish Fried Chicken arrives in NE DC (1309 5th Street NE) to fill a joyful, flavor-packed pop-up void from the team behind Shilling Canning Company, open at Union Market. It’s husband and wife team, Chef Reid Shilling and Sara Quinteros’ love letter to the crispy fried chicken that’s rooted in the cult favorite- and reimagined to be more accessible to all, more fun, and bursting with crunchy personality:)

The concept was cooked up by two dads with serious chops: Shilling and hospitality veteran Sheamus Feeley. But at the helm is powerhouse entrepreneur Quinteros — co-founder of Shilling, James Beard Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership alum, and the 100% woman-owner of Fancy Ranch.

While big sister Shilling Canning Company is rooted in upscale dining, Fancy Ranch is a chance to let loose. It’s casual, wallet-friendly and community-driven for finger-licking, chicken-loving folks from all walks of life, plus full of bold flavor — a celebration of comfort food done with intention.

“Dear PoPville,

Me: ‘USA beat everybody’ t-shirt wearing gal with blue hair and big black glasses.

You: guy rocking the latest navy blue US soccer jersey with a baseball cap and a megawatt smile.

Us: locked eyes outside section 135 at Audi. Celebrated USWNT domination, loved on Girma’s performance and missed Dunn together. Also, we completely ignored my friends.

The connection? Instant. The vibes? Incredible. The hug? Surprising, but excellent. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve lived in DC for almost 30 years . DC brought out the activist in me, but I’m also a lawyer who has had and has a very serious job.

On the Fourth of July, I decided to hang the flag I have upside down outside my front window. That flag was given to me after I was a law clerk (during law school) for Senator Leahy on the Senate Judiciary Committee. They fly it above the Capitol (probably for like one second, but still).

In addition, I took a gamble and put a small table on my curb with a sign that said “What do you want for America?” I left paper and markers. People responded!! And they keep responding, so I’m leaving it out. (more…)
