From the Office of the Attorney General:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that notorious landlord Sanford Capital, LLC, and its owner will return over $1.1 million in rent payments to 155 tenants forced to live in uninhabitable conditions. The joint settlement agreement resolves three consumer protection lawsuits the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) brought against Sanford for charging rent but failing to maintain its properties and endangering its tenants. It also resolves 32 claims filed by the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia on behalf of individual tenants relating to housing conditions at one Sanford property. Under the terms of the joint agreement, Sanford will be required to return rent paid by tenants at three properties located in Wards 5, 7, and 8, pay the District a penalty, and continue divesting from all their properties in the District as required by a previous settlement. Bars

“Dear PoPville,

My fiance and I are just starting to plan a wedding in DC and trying our hardest not to spend a billion dollars. We’re considering a restaurant for ceremony/dinner and then headed to a bar afterwards for drinks/dancing? The wedding is around 125-150, so pretty big. But of course not everyone will go to the bar afterwards. My guess is around ~50 or so would. (Ideally, we’d do Haydees in Mount Pleasant if that’s possible.)

Any good suggestions?”

Ed. Note: The Berliner only opened up next door/underneath Gypsy Sally’s about a year ago. I haven’t heard if the building sale/condo conversion will affect them. Stay tuned.

Thanks to all who messaged us. I keep forgetting to post this from Gypsy Sally’s:

As you may have heard, our landlord recently sold the building where we have resided since 2013. It will be developed into condominiums. With great sadness, Gypsy Sally’s will have its final load-out on January 5th, 2020. Until then, we plan on conducting business as usual with a full calendar of great music for you to enjoy. Stay tuned for info in the coming weeks regarding John Kadlecik’s plans for our final show. It is only fitting that John should preside over our send off, and we are honored that he will be hosting our closing festivities. (more…)

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Artemis II and Beyond,” on how the recent space mission fits into long-term plans for the Moon, with Michael J. Neufeld, retired senior curator for the Space History Department of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

NASA’s recent, spectacular Artemis II mission is a sign that the United States is serious about sending humans to the Moon again.

Thanks to Michael for sending the Ledo Pizza update yesterday. Folks in the know say they are approximately two weeks away from opening. Check out their menu here.

This space was previously home to Bar Roubaix here back in December 2017. Before Bar Roubaix this space was home to Acre 121 and CommonWealth gastro pub before them. Stay tuned for an exact date for Ledo Pizza.

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking for a place (preferably) in DC that accepts clothing donations. I used to go to the Martha’s Table on 14th St, but that has closed since the last time I donated. Trying to avoid those bins in parking lots. Any suggestions?”

Movies/TV/Streaming

Been getting a lot of messages lately about a movie filming around town. IncandescentMachine reports this morning:

“Looks like a film/TV set on D btwn 17 & 18 today.”

Bootsy with the goods: “CBS is making a mini series based on Comey’s book. Today they filmed a re-creation of the 2017 Women’s March.

Jeff Daniels and Holly Hunter are among the principles.”

From Variety:

“Brendan Gleeson has been cast as President Donald Trump while Michael Kelly will play Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe and Jennifer Ehle will play Patrice Comey, James’ wife.

The drama is slated to being production in November, 2019 with an airdate to be announced at a later date. CBS Studios has yet to determine whether the series will air on Showtime, CBS Access or both.”

H Street NE

Thanks to a reader for sending this rendering they found for 700 H Street, NE. First I’m hearing of this so not sure if this is still planned. The lettering is kind of small – does it look like it says delivering in 2017? Of course those dates often change but there is also a Shake Shack not too far away in Union Station. I’ll be sure to update if we learn more, STAY TUNED.

Thanks to all who messaged about the van that ended up in the middle of Sherman Circle yesterday:

“Odd Sherman Circle crash from today. Incredible the vehicle ended up in the middle of the circle. Police temporarily taped off the area. Car malfunction? Thankfully, looked like no one was hurt.”

“The kicker is how far the truck made it into the circle. It ran all the way up to the center and hit a light pole. All air bags deployed. Park police had it all taped off and waiting for tow truck. This happened about 4pm.”
