Checking in on the Damaged Sewer Line Spewing Wastewater: “Engineers on-site report the lowest level of overflow from the area around the collapse since the incident started”

“UPDATE: DC Water Begins Excavation to Assess Damaged Sewer Line and Lay Groundwork for Repair Efforts

Excavation is underway to access a damaged section of the Potomac Interceptor, a major sewer line that collapsed on January 19, along Clara Barton Parkway near the 495-interchange and C & O National Historical Park in Montgomery County, MD. This marks a pivotal step forward in the recovery process, allowing DC Water and its contractor to directly inspect the damaged pipe, exposing the affected section to assess its condition and formulate the best possible repair strategy.

A bypass system activated this weekend continues to successfully divert wastewater back into the sewer line further downstream of the collapse site. Engineers on-site report the lowest level of overflow from the area around the collapse since the incident started allowing the excavation activities to begin.

“Dear PoPville,

I lost my ring in DC this past weekend (Jan 25). It was my grandpas and a very important family item. Here are the details of the ring:

Gold men’s ring with a hole worn in one side and a diamond set. I think I lost it on the national mall (between 7th and the Lincoln memorial) but it could have been the metro (foggy bottom to Shaw) or around the Shaw metro area. I know, a very large area of potential findings. Thank you.”

Be a part of DC 2050: The roadmap for growth in the District

DC 2050 is the District’s next comprehensive plan, which determines where housing, jobs, and amenities should be located across the District. The DC Office of Planning is working on a full rewrite of the comprehensive plan based on technical research, best practices, and the community’s vision for DC’s future.

Why You Should Care

Do you struggle to find housing that meets your needs or your budget?
Do you want to see new businesses and economic activity in your neighborhood?
Are you concerned about the impact of new development?
Do you want to know more about how DC is changing and be a part of shaping that change?

DC 2050 is where these priorities are captured and turned into policies. This is the first full rewrite of DC’s comprehensive plan in over 20 years and your opportunity to share your priorities for how we grow for the next 25 years and beyond. No matter where you live in DC, if you rent or own, grew up here or came as an adult, your voice matters. Follow this project and get involved.

Your Voice Matters

When we kicked off this planning process in 2025, we committed to gathering feedback from DC residents, community organizations, and elected officials. From March 2025 to June 2026, we’ve reached over 6,600 people across all eight wards. We’ve also received thousands of comments across multiple online surveys.

If you have engaged with us, filled out our survey, or come to an event, thank you! We read every comment we receive and are working to incorporate the feedback into the draft plan.

I guess it’s simply to icy for tow trucks to operate or DC doesn’t have enough tow trucks? I get one day or even two but this is day four like this.

Good People Alert: Couple “act(s) of collective altruism”

“An act of collective altruism took place this afternoon outside Teaism in Dupont Circle. An SUV got stuck in the haphazardly plowed roads across from the tea house, its wheels spinning out as it tried to breach a small snow bank. A few folks tried to get the car moving, unsuccessfully. Then, in a flurry, a group of employees from Teaism filed out front, one by one, adorned with aprons in place of winter coats, and helped propel the car to freedom. The district may not have the perfect infrastructure to deal with the inundation of the winter storm, but DC’s citizens prove once again that they’re able to face unexpected challenges, together and head-on.”
