Hosted by DC nonprofit Archaeology in the Community, this annual festival gathers archaeologists and other heritage-related professionals from across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region to share the stories, science, and the discoveries that shape our understanding of the past. Taking place as part of DC Archaeology Month in June, the festival offers a full day of engaging experiences designed especially for kids and families.

Development

Capital Checkers, 9th and S Street, NW

Ed. Note: I’ve been concerned this might happen here since 2015.

“Capital Checkers was founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated players looking to create a more formal community. As DC has evolved, so has the organization. But some things never change: our commitment to the community, our passion for the game, and our friendships with each other.”

From an email:

“After 40 years as a DC cultural institution, Capital Checkers will soon be forced to close its doors in Shaw. Long time renters at 815 S St NW, the landlord has decided to sell the property and the club must leave by the end of March! (more…)

4th and I Street, SE photo by Matt Thornton

Matt warns: “Would you park in this empty space at 4th and I SE? If you do, DPW will ticket you at 2am, which I and many of my neighbors learned the hard way. Anyone want to venture a guess why? If you park within the clearly painted parking box, you are too close to the stop sign. Apparently you are not allowed to park within 25 feet of one, which means that even the front bumper of the grey car is too close (though the car across the street was not ticketed).”

Credit to DPW who replied to Matt: “Matt, please email us at [email protected], we’ll be able to figure out a better solution via email. Feel free to share this address with your neighbors.”

EZ asks last night: “is there a weird mechanical sound emanating from h street which sounds vaguely like a computer fan but scaled up annoying anyone else (besides my husband and I)? Anyone?”

Matt replies: “heard it on a walk with the dog about an hour ago. seemed to be coming from the red building across from sherwood at 10th & g.”

and K: “I hear it (in Trinidad) along w/the usual traffic sounds & that ONE noisy hound that a neighbor walks 2 early that howls like he’s hunting … maybe it’s metro/ Amtrak echos”
