A couple months ago we reported that Panas Gourmet Empandadas were shut down by the Department of Health due to their business license being expired according to Panas. Last month their front door got smashed.

Panas first opened up at 2029 P Street, NW back in June 2010. A good run. Thanks to Jonathan Padget for the final update: (more…)

3410 11th Street, NW between Park and Monroe

Changes continue for 11th Street in Columbia Heights. Earlier this week we learned that Maple would be closing at the end of the month and be replaced by an Italian restaurant. Of course when we first heard that KBC and then Good Silver had closed, folks were, rightly, super bummed. Time to get excited again!! Check out a sample menu below for the Queens English opening here mid-April:

Got a question on twitter:

“ISO good ramen in DC ? I know the Cherry Blossom pop-up on 7th is to have ramen & been to Haikan but know of anywhere else I can look into?”

And it sparked a heated debate so let’s settle it in two parts – best Ramen in D.C. and best in the burbs?

Some options mentioned were Daikaya, Toki, Maketto, Haikan, Bantam King, Chaplin’s, Oki, Reren, Ren’s Ramen, Saku Ramen, and others I can’t recall. So who are your favorites?

5504 Connecticut Ave, NW

Thanks to Stuart for passing on from the Chevy Chase listserv:

“I was in Pumpernickels/Arucolo (5534 Connecticut Avenue, NW) on Sunday morning – and go the skinny from the owner. They will be going to online sales only as of April 1. They plan to do baking and preperation offsite – and then use the various food delivery services available (uber eats etc.) Apparently Arucolo is also leaving.”

Pumpernickel’s twitter has a post on December 10th 2018 saying “PUMPERNICKEL’S IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED.” However there is a yelp review from February that says:

“Was glad to find out that this shop is not closed but joined with the restaurant Arucola so you can still get bagels there at a makeshift counter in the back of the dining room (hours are 7:30-8 am to 2 pm daily). (more…)
