Ed. Note: Back in 2014 then Mayor Gray Announced Plans to Build New Hospital on St. Elizabeths East Campus.

From a press release:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser today announced that her Administration and The George Washington University Hospital (GW Hospital) have signed a Letter of Intent to improve access to high quality healthcare services for Washingtonians, specifically for residents living in Wards 7 and 8. Together, the partners will develop a new acute care community hospital and health services complex located on the St. Elizabeths East campus in Ward 8, to be managed and operated by GW Hospital and fully integrated and aligned with the GW Hospital network of care and its affiliated faculty practice plan. The new hospital is expected to open in 2023 and include approximately 100-125 inpatient beds. Read More

Thanks to Nick for sending this morning’s sighting spotted in Navy Yard. I’ll echo what I said during our last sighting in August:

Be not alarmed and for God’s sake somebody please tell POTUS, this is simply our friends from Air Photos Live balloon who seem to be spotted every year or so. You can see a closeup shot from a previous sighting here.

Our first sighting was back in October 2009. Last year we learned “The balloon was launched by Digital Design and Imaging Inc. to take aerial photos of the District’s skyline as part of the joint Height Master Plan the DC Office of Planning and the National Capital Planning Commission are conducting in response to a Congressional request.”

Though I wonder if the explanation is still accurate. Why is the survey taking so long?

Ed. Note: Here is info on Saturday’s March For Our Lives Rally.

Like elected D.C. Council Member’s spewing anti-Semitic conspiracy theories – I really wish I didn’t have to post about this but we cannot pretend it didn’t happen. Thanks to all who messaged me the update from Monday’s Shots Fired at 14th and Upshur St, NW at 2:45pm. It was alluded to in the comments of the original post but here’s the full account from Julie Humphrey Vallelunga’s Facebook:

“There’s a bullet hole my child’s car seat. That bullet missed my neck by inches as I sat in my car at the intersection next to their school, waiting to pick them up a few minutes later. I saw the shooter a split second before my windshield shattered, completely unable to do anything. When I felt an immediate prick of pain, I had to wonder if I had been struck by flying glass or a bullet. (Just minor glass scrapes.) Read More

balloon

Erin tweets us:

“What is this big balloon flying over DC? Huge and hovering. I’m at 12th and M NE. It looks to us like it could be north of convention center? But also close to helicopter flight path?”

First spotted back in October 2009, this is the Air Photos Live: “balloon launched by Digital Design and Imaging Inc. to take aerial photos of the District’s skyline as part of the joint Height Master Plan the DC Office of Planning and the National Capital Planning Commission are conducting in response to a Congressional request.”

Anyone else spot it this morning? If so, where’d you see it from? We get sightings about every six months or so.  The last one was back in April.

And here’s a great close up from Mr. T in DC (@MrTinDC) from N Street, NW near the convention center pre-launch:

A reader reports at 8am:

Balloon over downtown. Super big balloon. I thought there were airspace issues with downtown DC.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have had a mild street harasser (typical cat caller… But he’s now started to follow me home.). I have filed a police report but now I’m freaked out he knows where I live. I have an alarm system but I’m hoping for a recommendation for good quality video camera to ensure he’s not coming around my home. Would the readers be able to recommend a camera/system that would give high quality imaging? Trying to not over react but I’m home alone with my 4 year old a lot while my husband travels and I’m pretty nervous now.”
