From a press release:

“Chef Michael Rafidi announces a May 30 opening for Yellow, a cafe and bakery with Levantine roots, located within his Navy Yard restaurant, Albi, at 1346 4th Street SE. The carryout cafe will be open Wednesday-Sunday from 9am-3pm, offering a taste of the Levant for breakfast, lunch, and all-day coffee. Chef Gregory Baumgartner, who oversees pastry at Albi, also leads the program at Yellow, which merges classic French technique with Middle Eastern flavors. Rafidi puts his mark on the menu with a selection of mezze and pita sandwiches. (more…)

Animal Fix

If you have any animal/pet photos you’d like to share for the regular fix please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and your neighborhood. AdoPtville is run by two volunteers who compile these pets weekly from local shelters.

Volunteer Note: Today’s adoptables are from organizations chosen for memorial donations by the family of Charles “Chuck” Poppe, the Manassas fire chief who passed away unexpectedly in late April. Please consider donating to these wonderful organizations if you can.

Chuck is a special dog (named for a very special hero; see above) who needs a special, even an extraordinary, forever home. Chuck, who is likely a mix of poodle and Chinese Crested breeds, is blind and mostly deaf. Additionally, he is an insulin-dependent diabetic, who needs to have twice-daily shots and a well-controlled diet. It’s a lot, for sure. But here’s the thing – this guy, once he started being treated for his diabetes, became a whole new being with so much to give to the right home. He’s an affectionate dog who likes to be close to his people, and has recently discovered a love for sunning himself on the deck. Chuck is about 8 years old, and is extremely friendly, loving to meet and make new friends! He’s working on housetraining as his diabetes makes him drink a lot of water, but a belly band helps with that, and he’s otherwise a perfect gentleman! Chuck is not the dog for everybody, but there’s somebody out there for whom Chuck is perfect! Is it you? Find out more about adopting this handsome guy here.

Pretty Sylvia is a confident diva hiding inside a shy kitty. Approximately 2 years old, Sylvia was found as a stray, but despite being scared of just about everything at first, loved to be cuddled by volunteers! Now that Sylvia has had a chance to warm up, she’s become even more affectionate! Sylvia loves her people and gets along well with other cats, but will do best in a quiet home without dogs or children, where her inner diva can really emerge. Sylvia’s a young cat with many years of love to share – if you’re interested in adopting this lovely lady, find out more here.

“Dear PoPville,

We want my dad, who has worked in HVAC and plumbing for over 40 years, to install air conditioning minisplit units at our house. He’s not licensed in DC, but I seem to remember reading something about DIY home improvement projects being done yourself or by immediate family not needing a permit or something similar, and heard the same from our real estate agent. Was this a hallucination/told to us in error? Is he able to do this work for us at all, or are we forced to hire a DC contractor or risk fines? It almost goes without saying that the DCRA website is less than intuitive or helpful, and has very little info for people interested in doing work themselves.”

“I find myself in need of help/advise on building a pool in NW DC. We are purchasing a home in Hawthorne and I don’t have the slightest clue where to begin with this endeavor. I know we will need DCRA approval, but I also want to find a reputable pool company-preferably not a big name chain, to do the design and work. Can you help please!”

Thanks to S. for passing on from Council Member Allen’s office:

“BEGINNING MONDAY: The new local road default speed limit will be 20 mph, down from 25 mph. This is a change I’ve urged as part of my Vision Zero Enhancement Legislation, so I’m grateful to see it going into effect for the safety of our residents. The Mayor said she expects this to be a permanent change, even after the public health emergency ends.

DDOT launching a “Slow Streets” Initiative that will reduce speeds to 15 mph and likely set up physical barriers to slow the entrance of vehicles onto roads. These roads will not be closed outright. I’ll share more information on this initiative as I have it, but other cities have used a similar approach very successfully.

Mayor Bowser tweeted: “The new speed limit will go into effect this Monday, June 1st. 20 is plenty.”

and regarding the graphic above:

Streateries: streets that will allow for safe, outdoor space that restaurants, retailers and their customers can use.”
