Capitol Hill

“Through much of the 19th century and the early 20th century, Washington DC experienced a boom in alley dwellings. While the real estate developers were designing and constructing impressive homes for the wealthier residents, they were building much smaller structures in back alleyways with mostly no running water or electricity. As the city’s population rose, the poor and working-class people began living in these dwellings in large numbers. With a majority Black population, these alleyway neighborhoods created tightly-knit communities. (more…)

From DC Water:

“Two initiatives to assist flood victims were announced by DC Water last night, including one that will give residents direct financial assistance with removing standing water damage in their homes.

The two programs are one time only and are aimed at helping customers who were impacted by the historically heavy rainfall of September 10 which caused heavy flooding in upper Northeast DC and across the region. (more…)

Medical

explore data here

Ed. Note: Yesterday there were 14,790 total positives.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“The District’s reported data for Thursday, September 17, 2020 includes 62 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 14,852.

The District reported no additional COVID-19 related deaths.

Tragically, 619 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The community spread chart is subject to fluctuation because the data is based on symptom onset date. As national demand for testing increases and results take longer to come back in DC and across the country, DC Health has identified a need to increase the reporting lag time by four days to reduce volatility in the data. The most recent data reflects an increase in community spread. To ensure this graph accurately reflects the most recent data, the community spread count is being paused as these adjustments are made.” (more…)

In a city where everyone seems to be moving at a hundred miles an hour, finding a moment of calm can feel like a luxury. At Luxie Spa, tucked into the heart of Capitol Hill, that luxury is intentional.

Luxie Spa has become one of D.C.’s most talked-about destinations for those who want more than a routine beauty appointment. Combining high-end technique with a personalized touch — creates an experience that feels both indulgent and deeply restorative.

From WMATA:

“Today the Metro Board of Directors voted on potential service cuts, schedule changes, and other cost-cutting measures, including layoffs, that will be necessary to balance the budget if federal CARES Act funding runs out without new revenue. Metro is required to have a balanced budget, essentially forcing the Board to consider $200 million in spending cuts in the event that federal relief ends.

Metro has estimated that it will deplete its share of CARES funding by the end of the calendar year. The funding has been used to maintain essential public transit service in the region at a time when ridership and revenue has dropped as much as 90 percent on some lines. (more…)

To celebrate DC native Haili Blassingame’s debut novel, THEY ALL FALL IN LOVE AT THE END, Lost City Books is throwing a launch party themed around messy love stories. Haili, and a crew of writers she has assembled, will read excerpts from their work, but there will also be audience participation in the form of anonymously submitting messy dating stories. It’s going to be a night of laughter, of gasps, of books, of great company. Refreshments will be available. We can’t wait to see you there!

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will celebrate the District’s eighth annual Park(ing) Day on September 18, 2020. The annual event highlights the District’s Sustainable DC goals and kicks off World Car Free Day activities in the region.

“Park(ing) Day 2020 builds on Mayor Bowser’s efforts to reimagine public space, especially during the pandemic,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “This year’s event is an opportunity for Washingtonians to practice safe social distancing and use our collective imagination for creative ways to occupy the curbside space that don’t involve storing cars.”

Park(ing) Day 2020 will feature pop-up parklets in metered, on-street parking spaces without time-of-day restrictions. This year’s parklets will be installed at the following locations: (more…)
