Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

The topic of sound mitigation in these old D.C. rowhomes has been much discussed in PoPville. Hearing actual conversations on the floor above, loud footfalls in the middle of the night and the roar of the hair dryer should not be ways of life in basement homes. It’ll never be perfect silence, yet we know people have found ways to make it more bearable for the subterranean residents.

Finding contractors these days isn’t easy. Most are so busy, and so many others don’t do this sort of job. One contractor we spoke with wanted to charge what was essentially the cost of a mid-range sedan to do sound mitigation work to our basement ceiling. So we wanted to ask those members of the PoPville nation who have been there and are now living in relative quiet who they hired, whether they are happy with the result and how much it cost.

From the Mayor’s Office yesterday:

“Today, the Council of the District of Columbia unanimously approved Mayor Bowser’s Fiscal Year 2022 spending plan – the District’s 26th consecutive balanced budget. Following the Council’s vote, the Mayor released the following statement:

“This budget is transformational, as it is a $17.5 billion investment in a more equitable DC, and an opportunity to give more Washingtonians a fair shot. It allows us to meet the moment we are facing by making the biggest investments in the residents and local businesses hit hardest by the health and economic crises of the past 17 months. By combining once-in-a-lifetime federal and stable local revenue, we are able to make historic investments in our city’s greatest challenges. (more…)

Dear PoPville

Ed. Note: Another reader asks: “Has anyone else had their residential PEPCO account hacked? My account was just deactivated.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am hoping to alert NoMa residents to a credit card mail theft scheme that has happened to at least five NoMa residents in the past few months.

Through Facebook and Reddit, I have corroborating stories from five separate victims that their new credit cards were stolen in the mail, activated, and then used for thousand-dollar shopping sprees at Tyson’s Corner, Virginia. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office yesterday:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrated the reopening of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and joined Events DC in announcing the addition of two locally-owned vendors inside the Convention Center, Ben’s Chili Bowl and Shop Made in DC.

“We have been inviting people to come back and experience DC, and it is always important to us that visitors are able to experience the real DC. It doesn’t get more DC than Ben’s Chili Bowl or a whole shop filled with items made by DC creatives,” said Mayor Bowser. “Spread the word: DC is open and so is our Convention Center.”

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center opens ahead of two major conventions, Otakon and Awesome Con. (more…)
