Thanks to Katrina for sending: “On my morning jog I ran into this guy dining on a squirrel for breakfast. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the dramatic shot of him diving in for the kill, but it was quite impressive.”
If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

I had to be quick on the draw to catch this guy in action in Georgetown.

Thanks to John for sending from out front of The Commodore. The petition says:
“Show support in a public attempt to preserve DC’s friendliest public house. This petition is an independent action of individuals in the Shaw/Logan community, as a wish to save the area’s (arguably, the city’s) best bar.” (more…)
Kids will be kids but lately, there’s been enough real crime in the area (Petworth). By the police officer not stopping, there’s a lost opportunity to educate. The officer, by default a representative of our community, is clearly sending a message that this sort of behavior is condoned or something that can be gotten away with. (more…)
If you have any animal/pet photos you’d like to share for the regular fix please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and your neighborhood. AdoPtville is run by two volunteers who compile these pets weekly from local shelters.

Some might call me a gentle giant, others might call me a silent softie. Either way, they would be right. My name is Johnny and I am pretty easy to please. I like plushy toys, chilling out at home with my people, and leisurely (but not necessarily long) walks. As far as dogs go, I’m calm, cool, and collected. My charming good looks make it pretty easy to get people’s attention. A home with some awesome humans to snuggle up with and no other animals would be my happy place.
Like I said, I am pretty calm, so I am very easy to walk and follow directions well. As long as there is something comfy to lie on, I can easily hang out in my crate for a couple hours. I am loyal and love the people who love me, so I try really hard to be a good boy. I am also very smart and have mastered the art of opening doors.
Some of my superpowers include letting my people know when I need to use the bathroom and always doing it outside, magically and quietly appearing in whatever room you are in, and being very relaxed on car rides. If you’d like to come meet me, email my foster parent at [email protected]. As an added bonus, if you’re over 50, my adoption fee is waived as part of the Boomer’s Buddies program! Gosh, I can’t believe it! My dear owner had to move and couldn’t take me along. But I’m a really adaptable kind of guy with kitten-like energy so I’m looking for a wonderful new home. I will happily curl up in bed with you and join you on the couch while you read. To show you that I get along with everybody, I can tell you that I’ve lived happily with children (young and older), adults, and even dogs and another cat. So, you see, I’m a great candidate for a forever home where I can look out windows and climb my cat tree. As an added bonus, if you’re over 50, my adoption fee is waived as part of the Boomer’s Buddies program! Standard adoption procedures apply. If you’d like to meet me, please contact my foster mom at [email protected]! Learn more here.

“Dear PoPville,
Spotted in a Petworth alley — I’m assuming this is an ADU, but the architecture seem kinda wonky. New as of a few (3?) weeks ago…Wondering if any readers have any light to shed (no pun intended) on this structure.”

“Dear PoPville,
I swear the intersection of H and New York NW (between 13th and 14th) has to be the most dangerous intersection in DC. Pedestrians are given a walk light for just half of the road, then expected to wait in the middle of the road to get a different walk light for the second half of the crossing. Because this is such an unusual way to cross the street, I think it doesn’t even occur to people that they have to wait for the second light; they then charge across, thinking they have a walk light, while oncoming traffic has a green light to go. It doesn’t help that this is in the heart of downtown where tons of people need to cross the road! (more…)
