I live in Adams Morgan and wrote to my apartment management when they closed amenities in March due to COVID-19 to see if they would be willing to reduce the rent. While we certainly agree with their decision, we chose the apartment building specifically for the amenities, and pay a lot of money to use the rooftop, gym, lounge, courtyard, and other perks. With these being closed, we thought it was fair to request a bit of reduction in our rent, especially considering the financial uncertainty of these times. Management wrote back saying they were open to negotiations but first wanted to know if other apartments have done the same before making a decision on the amount. (more…)

DC residents, especially my service industry friends receiving unemployment, please take two minutes to sign this letter and support undocumented workers in the District.
Mayor Bowser undocumented immigrants who pay taxes to DC every year, should not be left out of the cash assistance bill. We are not expendable. Our work is not invisible.“

“I’m looking for a good, appropriately socially distant way to get flowers/ plants/ seeds during this. Are there any nurseries/ farmstands/ local growers offering pre-paid delivery or pick-up?“

Thanks to Beverly for sharing the good news about Honey:
“A happy ending to your tweet from March 30. Honey was found on our block this morning! Thanks to everyone who looked for him over the last nine days! Columbia Heights neighbors are amazing!“
Thanks to Beekeeper Brian Danza, “a beekeeping hobbyist” (@cherryblossomhoney on IG), for showing us the before an after of how he gets those bees from yesterday off the tree and ready to transport, in this case to Virginia. (more…)

“My mom’s 16 year old toy poodle got out of the gate and across the street and fell down the sewer drain (at Crittenden & Queens Chapel NE). Prince the poodle is elderly, blind, and deaf. My mom called me in a panic at 4:00, saying that our neighbor had seen Prince fall. 311 dispatched Humane Rescue Alliance, and the DC fire department later arrived to try to open every man hole near where Prince was last seen. After 2 hours I thought we would call it. But the DC humane rescue did not give up!
DC water opened the cemented man hole covers and went atleast a 1/2 mile down the street trying to open every man hole cover. When we were ready to give up (again), DC water removed the last cover and DC humane society fearlessly went into the hole and found Prince!!
We were so impressed with how compassionate, relentless and professional the humane rescue staff were and can not thank them enough!! In this time of uncertainty, it’s great to know that people still really care and that we haven’t given up on each other, or our pets!!”
