Chinatown

7th and H Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what work is going on with the Arch (not sure if it is just a quick paint job or a full renovation?) and when it is going to end? Saw this today, and I don’t remember seeing it before.”

From a press release:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the District will begin conservation work on the iconic Friendship Archway, located at 7th and H Streets NW in historic Chinatown, starting on Monday, June 15, 2020.

“The Friendship Archway represents the strength of our Asian American and Pacific Islander community and celebrates their contributions to the District,” said Mayor Bowser. “This project, on the heels of Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month, will ensure the Archway remains an iconic landmark in Chinatown for years to come.”

The multi-agency effort is led by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH), working in partnership with the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA), the Department of General Services (DGS), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and the Washington Metropolitan Area Regional Transit Authority (WMATA). “Dear PoPville,

Any update from those who went to gyms last week on how they are handling cleaning and keeping people safe?”

Another reader asks: “I’m starting to see organized outdoor exercise classes around town. Does anyone know who is organizing them? I would like to get involved. In particular, I’ve seen them happening in the field of Garrison Elementary.”

Development

Reeves Center at 14th and U Street, NW

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has signed a letter of intent with the District to move their national headquarters to Washington, DC within the future redevelopment of the Frank D. Reeves Center of Municipal Affairs at 2000 14th Street NW.

“The Reeves Center stands in an iconic and culturally significant area of the U Street corridor with deep connections to the NAACP,” said Mayor Bowser. “As we continue fighting for change and working to build a more fair and just nation, we look forward to welcoming this iconic civil rights organization to Washington, DC.”

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is America’s premier and largest civil rights organization. Through its Washington, DC bureau, the NAACP helped to advance not only integration of the United States Armed Forces in 1948 but also passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1964, and 1968 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “Dear PoPville,

I understand that business need to reopen and keep things afloat, and a big part of that is outdoor seating. But I walked past Bluestone Lane in Logan Circle this morning and saw these tables in the middle of what I believe is a public sidewalk. Is this legal, and even if it is, isn’t this violating some kind of social distancing rules? There’s no way to get around the tables in a “socially distant” manner if people are sitting there (and if people are also sitting on the benches, which they usually are). Also, it’s just plain annoying to have this in the middle of the sidewalk.”

Ed. Note: I know many establishments were able to apply for extended patios. I’m not 100% sure what’s happening here but from the photo it looks like maybe they placed a separation so that it is safe to walk by in the street?

Bars

14th and R Street, NW

From a press release:

“Jane Jane, a cocktail bar co-owned and operated by friends and Washington, D.C. hospitality veterans Jean Paul (J.P.) Sabatier, Ralph Brabham and Drew Porterfield will open this fall in the mission-driven mixed-use development Liz, located at 1705 14th St NW.

Sabatier, who was recognized as one of Zagat’s “30 under 30,” will helm the bar and oversee the cocktail program. His experience spans many years with front and back of house positions at Rappahannock Oyster Bar, Maydan, Compass Rose, and Knightsbridge Restaurant Group. Brabham and Porterfield are North Carolina natives who together own the popular Shaw restaurants Beau Thai and BKK Cookshop. Brabham, an attorney who has been in the hospitality industry for the last ten years with Porterfield, who is also the gallery director at the Long View Gallery in Shaw will run operations of Jane Jane as co-owners. The three friends were inspired to open Jane Jane after the success of the Southern-inspired pop-up ‘Dot’s Spot,’ which they hosted on the patio of BKK Cookshop in 2017. Their desire to create a place that serves well-crafted classic cocktails, Southern-inspired snacks, with welcoming, inclusive hospitality were the driving factors behind the decision to open Jane Jane.
