Author Honorée Fanonne Jeffers shared:

“Beloved:

I’m so sad to report that, due to current events in Washington, D.C., I have decided not to travel to D.C. to participate in the National Book Festival on September 6, 2025.

I really—REALLY!!!!— wanted to attend to be in conversation again with the incomparable, brilliant Imani Perry, but given all that’s happening, frankly, as an African American, I’m just afraid to be in that city. I wish I had more courage—but my cancellation is in no way a reflection of those who do have the courage to attend or on the wonderful organizers of the National Book Festival! Dan Silverman, occasionally fallible, always well-meaning…

AGAIN, mea culpa for my earlier morning mistake about how many Jersey Mike’s locations there are in DC so I am seeking REDEMPTION with this post.

The good people from Jersey Mike’s tell me that their 5th DC location coming across the street from the zoo (3000 Connecticut Ave, NW) will be opening “early October” and there is already a 6th location in the works for Capitol Hill coming to 209 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE and will open in “early 2026.”

Stay tuned for exact opening dates.

From the National Zoo:

“Earlier this spring, giant panda Qing Bao experienced her first estrus cycle—the very short window when female giant pandas are able to conceive a cub. She and male Bao Li didn’t breed this year, but changes in Qing Bao’s behavior and hormones indicate she’s going through pseudopregnancy—the phenomenon where a female panda behaves as if she is pregnant, even though she isn’t.” (more…)
