wildlife

Thanks to Zach for sending: “spotted a great turtle this morning while out at Kingman Island, I think it’s an Eastern River Cooter. It was massive and had a super mossy (*it’s technically algae) shell.”

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

“Rosie from 16th Street Heights after a rainy day mud romp”

“Having spent the last 16 months in Roxbury Correctional Facility in happy hounds prison dog initiative program, Oakley found his forever home in March of this year! After 2 days of fostering him we knew we couldn’t ever part with him, even though he cried all night for the first week. He had a home for the first 6 years of his life but was surrendered to animal control when he became dog reactive after getting attacked. He was in the prison program living with an inmate for so long learning new tricks and behavior skills so he could get adopted again, and had a few failed attempts before we found him. The goal is for Oakley to be my therapy dog, as I’m a clinical social worker, but for now he enjoys going through the trash, eating ice cream, and chasing the ball.”

Our daytime pop-up cafe – @aardvarkcafe – will continue to operate but Room 11 will go dark for the winter months. Over 11 years we have operated a business dedicated to serving our neighbors in Columbia Heights but we are now facing our most difficult challenge yet. (more…)

Adams Morgan

“Dear PoPville,

I live in a historic, rent-controlled apartment building in Adams Morgan. Yesterday, my landlord emailed all the tenants in the building to let us know he would be doing a walk through of each unit. Today, I got a knock on the door and was met with 5 strangers, 2 of whom were wearing masks with the logo of a real estate development firm on it. (more…)
