Thanks to a tipster for sending word of Compass Coffee’s next location – 800 17th Street, NW:

Compass Coffee recently celebrated being open 1000 days. A couple weeks ago we also learned they were coming to 14th and I St, NW as well. They’re already open at 18th and I St, NW. As for this most recent location coming to 800 17th Street, NW – it’s interesting to note that La Colombe recently opened around the corner in late February.

1121 14th Street, NW
Well this is some exciting news from Arepa Zone owner Gabriela Febres about the former Chix location on 14th:
“Arepa Zone will be taking over the 14th Street location” (more…)

Thanks to all who messaged us. Sarah writes: “another one bites the dust on 19th between M & L. Maso salad/sandwich shop, which i really liked!”
MASO Life + Flavor opened in the former Nature’s Table space back in 2015. Stay tuned.

1720 I Street, NW
The liquor license placard posted outside the former Cafe Asia space says:
“Effigy
Licensee requests to transfer license from Safekeeping (former address 2840 Alabama Avenue, S.E.) to a new location at 1720 I Street, N.W. Maximum Number of Seats 350, and Total Occupancy Load of 500. Nude Performances permitted.”
Stay tuned.

Will you make up your god danged mind 19th Street?!?!? Protein Bar closed here in March 2016. [Cafe Carvy closed across the street on Friday.] Well, now one of my finest falafel sources [s/he has a 98% accuracy rating] tells me that a Naf Naf Grill is probably taking over the space. Naf Naf’s website says:
“Naf Naf Grill is the premium destination for fresh, authentic Middle Eastern food. Oven baked pitas, hand cut salads, and freshly prepared sauces all served as an accompaniment to award-winning shawarma and falafel.”
Check out their menu here and STAY TUNED.

“Dear PoPville,
I’m hoping you can help resolve my confusion over what’s happening at Chix’s 14th Street location. I went there to grab dinner at 8pm on Thursday night (they close at 9:30), but the lights were off and the doors were locked (sorry – forgot to take a pic). However, there was no sign explaining what was up, nor were there any updates to their website, FB page, or Twitter feed. They appear to have been closed ever since. I’ve tried calling both that location and the Navy Yard restaurant and emailed them as well, but I haven’t received an answer. Anyone know what’s going on? I really hope the closure isn’t permanent!”
Ed. Note: Chix’s 14th Street location opened back in 2012. Their original 11th Street location closed back in December (now Charcoal Town.) I sent an email to inquire the status of 14th Street and have not yet heard back either. Updates when more is known.

The Best Sandwich Shop opened at 1776 I St, NW back in 2014 (and Georgetown before that) and if you’re incredibly lazy, you’re in luck! I’m just kidding that is a legit far four blocks if you’re an office worker just looking for a quick bite. This spot is opening across from Franklin Square. I love the name – any fans of the other locations? You can see their sandwich menu here.

I’m not wasting any more beer by pouring it out for 19th Street. No more! Oy this has been a horrible 24 hours. Thanks to a reader for sending:
“I got news this morning from the owner that my beloved downtown breakfast and lunch spot is permanently closing as of today. Café Carvy at 19th and K St was THE office go-to for breakfast sandwiches, the best iced coffee (with coffee ice cubes!), and fresh carved turkey and roast beef for lunch. Always a great value and really friendly service. My officemates and I are extremely devastated.”
Cafe Carvy opened in the old Spice Indian Bistro space back in 2012.

Thanks to a tipster for sending the permit for a new coffee shop coming to 1401 I St, NW. They say it’ll be another Compass Coffee.

They recently opened a spot at 18th and I St, NW back in September.
