Thanks to a reader for sending these photos announcing the replacement at the recently closed Hello Cupcake space in Dupont – Un Je Ne Sais Quoi, a French pastry shop.

Merveilleux is:

“a small cake that originated in Belgium and is now found in France and some U.S. cities. It consists of a sandwich of two light meringues welded with whipped cream which has been covered with whipped cream and dusted with chocolate shavings. A candied cherry sometimes decorates the cake.”

Updates when an opening date is announced.

Yesterday we spoke about Seasonal Pantry’s planned departure in April. Lisa writes in the comments:

“I’m the landlord. What would the neighborhood like in this quirky space? We’ll put up a sign and contact info soon.”

Via Email Lisa adds:

“It’s 3 staggered levels with an option for a 4th. Each is approx 300 sf. There is the storefront level, a lower English Basement level with back door, a lower basement (beneath the storefront) with sinks etc, and the option is another space with a window that opens onto the back yard and a door into the hallway. There is no hood nor can there be one. We’re open for almost anything that can make itself at home is this quirky space. Would like tenant to appeal not only to the neighborhood but give the Cambria Suites Hotel visitors another reason to not hop into a cab the second they exit the hotel.”

Also, keep in mind all this (and more across the street too) are opening soon nearby. Think an Upshur Street Books could do well here? Or stick with food?

From Toro Mata:

“Dear Friends:

After more than ten years, Toro Mata will be closing our 18th Street shop on January 24th, 2016.

We will forever be grateful for the many memorable experiences and treasured friendships that have come our way. We are especially thankful for the consistent support we received from our Adams Morgan neighbors over the years.

After we take a short break this winter, you will still be able to find us in DC at various markets and “pop up” events in the near term. We are also exploring new permanent locations for the future. Please continue to follow us on Facebook for the latest details.

We encourage anyone with a gift certificate or store credit to redeem in the next three weeks, but we will also honor these credits at any location in the future.

We are extending our Year End Clearance Sale until Sunday the 24th of January. Please stop in and enjoy the savings!

Warmest Regards,

Hector Zarate and Jim Nixon
TORO MATA”

Our friends from ATTIC DC (online resource for finding furniture from local stores and the same folks who accurately reported Millennium closing on U Street) share the sad news:

“Next up is Trohv in Takoma [232 Carroll Street, NW]. They’re planning to close for good in mid to late January. They’re starting to offer discounts etc. Their original Baltimore store will remain open.”

Update: Official announcement from Trohv:

“Hi Friends and Neighbors!

We hope the holidays have treated you and your families well. As we enter the New Year, we have news about our DC shop. We’ll keep it short and sweet. We’ve loved being a part of the DC and Takoma communities. We’ve met 1000s of great customers and supported more than 150 local artists during our nearly five years being open in Takoma. To the Takoma community specifically, thank you for welcoming us, appreciating the store, and letting us participate in various ways in your amazing community. Despite how much we’ve loved being part of the Takoma/DC community, the DC shop hasn’t met our hopes and we’ve decided to close the DC shop in order to focus on our Baltimore location.

Our DC shop’s last day for business will be on or around January 17, 2016. Beginning on January 4, we will have a store-wide closing sale where we’ll mark down items ranging from 20-80%. We will be selling pretty much everything, including store fixtures, displays, lighting, and various materials for a wide-range of potential projects. The one exception for sales, as usual, will be on artist-made consignment items. We’ll be offering discounts on those items as agreed to by the various artists. All sales will be final. (more…)
