Thanks to a reader for sending word about Yamas closing their other DC location. They closed their Adams Morgan location over the summer (now home to Ben Tre Vietnamese Cuisine. Yamas opened at 16th and U back in May 2014. Updates when we learn who takes over the space.

Thanks to all who emailed the new signage above El Sol, formerly El Sauce next to the Capital Market grocery store. We’ve been waiting since 2014 for Phonation to open their brick and mortar. Their facebook still has “Tentative opening date is February 2015…” but should be any day now! Stay tuned for an exact opening date.

“While the nation’s capital hosts inauguration weekend, 124 local hospitality businesses are making a statement of love, compassion and community by donating proceeds from the weekend to local charities. Washington, DC’s thriving service industry organized together to give generously from their profits to local service organizations. The diversity of participating venues is as dynamic as the DMV itself, from restaurants like Bad Saint, District Distilling Co. and Oyamel to shops and retailers like Scissor & Comb Salon, Logan Hardware and Glen’s Garden Market. Visitors and residents are encouraged to dine, drink and shop at the participating businesses this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and beyond.
All Is Service DC is an initiative of 124 venues city wide that are donating to causes as diverse as women’s health, the arts, LGBTQ issues, homelessness, food access, support for the local migrant community and the environment. The message has been positively overwhelming: DC’s service industry welcomes all for an opportunity to give back.
All In Service DC is the brainchild of two local service industry professionals inspired to give more to the community.
“We put out the call and DC’s hospitality community responded,” says Alaina Dyne, co-creator of All In Service DC. “Giving back is not just about being generous with your dollars, it is also about being generous with your attention to others. Lunch bowls start at $6.95 and include the Bento Bowl, which features edamame, stir-fry quinoa and apple-cabbage slaw and the Burrito Bowl, with guacamole, asada portobello mushrooms and tortilla chips. 1132 19th Street, NW
We shoulda known after the initial promise of a “glamping experience”…
Washington Business Journal reports:
“The hits keep coming on 19th Street NW downtown: Bonfire, the fire-themed restaurant that only opened last February, will shutter later this month.”
Ed. Note: They opened in late April/early May.
Famous Luigi’s Pizza closed after 70 years at 19th and M St, NW back in December 2013.
Other relatively recent closures on 19th Street include Olivia’s Diner and Science Club and Sophie’s Cuban and Protein Bar and Smith and Wollensky’s and Shoes by Lara and Red Robin Burger Works and Noodles and Co. not to mention Melt Shop around the corner…
11th and Florida Avenue, NW
Not such a gloomy morning after all!! Nice update from Florida Avenue Grill:
“We are very grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from the DC Community since the news broke that the Grill was facing foreclosure. You may have heard that we were forced to sue our lender for deceptive practices aimed at forcing us into foreclosure and that the Attorney General of New York is suing the same folks for allegedly defrauding tens of thousands of people. The NY AG said of them: “We will not allow companies to hold small businesses for ransom using lies and forgery.”
We are happy to announce that we were successfully able to fend off the foreclosure sale that was scheduled for the Grill. Unfortunately, even that comes at a cost as we incurred tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and accelerated our mortgage to a payoff in a year. We settled because the reality is that, even though we are right, we are not in a position to fund skyrocketing legal costs and survive a long court battle with a lender as litigious and deep-pocketed as theirs. These folks are responsible for 25% of all the general or consumer debt cases in New York and hold a whopping 40% of all the default judgments against people in New York County! Part of why the NY AG is going after them is that one of their alleged practices is to get default judgments against tens of thousands of people, many of whom don’t even know they are being sued until they find out their credit is messed up. I feel neither joy or pain. I feel nothing. Though I do feel bad for those who poured their hearts into it. Wishing better luck in their next endeavor. Updates when we learn what becomes of the space.
