mbt

“Dear PoPville,

Not sending this to start another conversation about safety on the MBT, a trail I use almost everyday, but to ask you/readers to keep an eye out for a woman on a motorbike in the area — or on the trail itself.

Yesterday, while riding home on the trail from work, this woman entered the trail at NOMA. I let her know that it was a bike and pedestrian trail only (even though it’s clearly marked, some think it’s an access road), but she kept going. I decided to call 911 – clearly on a nice day, or any day for that matter, with runners, children, and dogs, a trail is no place for a motorbike. I was on with 911 for a few minutes until I saw that bicycle cop on the trail had stopped her at S Street NE, so I hung up thinking the cop was handling the situation.

She must have recognized me or overheard my conversation, because the moment I passed by, she sped off and headed west off 4th. Moments later I heard the bike’s engine come up behind me while I was riding north on 4th in the bike lane. As she passed by me, within inches of my bike, she slapped/sucker punched me across the left side of my jaw (there were two witnesses to this — one was a lovely woman who turned her car around to make sure I was okay). Shaken, I rode back to find the police officer on the trail and filed a report. He indicated that she was arguing with him about who could use the trail — she suggested that she could because people were also pushing baby strollers.

I’m asking you all to keep any eye out for her, but unfortunately I don’t have a good description of her. African American woman. Small (not quite a Vespa, but not a motorcycle either), black bike, red/reddish orange helmet, sunglasses. The back of the bike was also rigged with a square storage system. If you see anyone matching that description, I would appreciate you letting the police know.”

Readers report just before 8:45am:

“There was another bike accident at the corner of 13th and Florida Ave a little before 8am this morning. It appeared the biker fell off his bike and a car was not involved. Please be careful at that intersection folks!”

and

“Another bad bike accident at 13th and Florida this morning. No car involved this time. Apparently, the bumps in the road caused the biker to lose control. He was really beat up and being loaded into the ambulance on a backboard when I walked by.”

New bike 2009

“Dear PoPville,

I was in the middle of moving from Columbia heights to Shaw and my bike got stolen out of my car at my house in the 900 block of Monroe St, NW. It’s a 47 cm black and yellow Felt road bike. It’s not expensive but I love love love that bike.”

bike obit

“Dear PoPville,

My beloved ride was stolen off my porch in between 5th and Randolph St, NW just yesterday. It’s not a sweet ride like the giant orange commuter bike stolen a month ago, nor is it a high end speedster. It was my little white ghost that i bought off ebay and lovingly added the best that I could afford over time.

I wrote an obit just to find closure incase it’s not recovered:

So long good friend. Right now I’m averaging a stolen bike 1 per 2.8 years. I remember when I first bought you off ebay and I’ve been slowly hooking you up with the new brakes, derailleurs, rims, tires and the like. You became my own. Now, you’re probably chopped up or being sold to support a drug habit. Nothing will replace the good times we had. The night rides, the all day trips with my wife. The getaways around town. Even the days out back fixing you up.. when really, I just needed to get out the house lol. So long good friend.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last night a man on a bicycle was struck by a car at 13th and M Street NW around 10:15pm. After calling 911, a few of us gathered around him to do what we could until the ambulance arrived. One woman supported his neck, I held his hand, someone else checked his pulse and a few others offered any help they could. He was badly injured. I cannot stop thinking about him, and I just want to know if he is okay. I know this is eerily similar to the post you shared earlier in the week. If anyone knows what happened to him or how to find out, please share. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

“Dear PoPville,

Can you help me find witnesses to a crash yesterday? I was involved in a car/bicycle crash on 17th st. nw, between Pennsylvania and F. I was on my bike. Several people were on the sidewalk, but they were gone by the time MPD showed up. If anyone saw anything, I’d like to talk to them. [email protected]

bikehouseinaction

“Dear PoPville,

The Bike House has been helping people fix their bikes at the Bloomingdale Farmers Market for the past four years. While we don’t have a full shop’s worth of tools, we have enough supplies to do basic repairs, lube chains, put air in tires, and generally point people in the right direction. The Bike House is an all-volunteer operation that relies on support from the community to exist. We had been storing our tools, repair stand, and tent nearby the 1st and R market, but unfortunately, that arrangement no longer works. In order to continue our Bloomingdale operation, we need a place to put our stuff.

The Bike House is looking for somewhere near 1st and R, NW to store a medium-sized rubbermaid bin of supplies, a repair stand, and a pump. All told about 10 square feet of stuff. Your storage space doesn’t have to be fancy, just safe and dry and somewhere accessible where volunteers could come grab it Sunday mornings.

Let us know if you think you can help. The good karma you get will mean you never get a flat tire again.

We can be reached at [email protected]. Thanks.”

stolen bike

Is this a common tactic? Keep your eyes peeled for this one if you can.

“Dear PoPville,

Basically, my bike got stolen and I’d love to get it back, if possible.

I work a part time job at The Coupe on the weekends. On Sunday, I biked to The Coupe to start my shift. The bike rack was full, so I locked (using a U Lock) my bike to the northeast stop sign of Monroe and Park Rd, across the street from The Coupe. When my shift was ended, I found another bike (a gray Fuji Silhouette) locked to mine. I checked, and the Fuji didn’t belong to anyone at The Coupe, so I decided to walk home, hoping that the owner would unlock their bike by the next day.

I worked all day Monday at my full-time job, and returned to Monroe and Park to check on my bike only to find it gone. There was no sign of my bike or the gray Fuji or either bike lock. I filed a police report and registered my stolen bike on bikeindex.org.”
