bike crash

A reader reports just after 7am:

“This is the scene at 13th and Florida NW right now. The roads are blocked off and in the intersection there’s a twisted yellow bicycle, a backpack, and what looks like a shirt. There’s a car stopped inside the police tape, too, but I don’t know if it was involved. (I’ve seen some horrible wipe-outs from bikers losing control going down that hill.) I really the biker is okay!”

@DCPoliceTraffic tweeted:

“Update street closures remain in the 1300-1400 blk of Florida Ave NW in both direction pending the investigation”

“Black single speed (fixed gear) bike stolen late friday (4/15) night from the hallway of my house in Columbia Heights on Harvard St.

The bike (image above): bull horn handle bars with tan bar tape; Brooks saddle; monkeylectric light on wheel; reynolds 520 tubing (sticker on frame)

Would be grateful of any leads or information”

and

“Early this morning (4/16) around 4:30am someone stole two bicycles from our backyard: one dark green Surly Cross-Check with white fenders and one brand new grey Trek 7.2 FX. I’m desperate to get them back, and so I welcome folks who might see them up for sale to buy them back–I will reimburse you. You’ll know the Surly is stolen because my U lock is locked to the frame.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have been organizing family bike rides in DC for nearly 5 years under my nom de guerre Kidical Mass DC, and have ridden a giant orange cargo bike around DC for nearly that long. Today that bike was stolen from in front of Bridges Public Charter School while I took my son inside to use the bathroom.

I’m heartbroken. This bike has been our family’s main mode of transportation for 4 years. It’s unique and deeply loved. I’ve been told that stolen cargo bikes are often taken for quick joyrides and then abandoned, so it may turn up in an alley or backyard in Petworth soon.”

More info here. Keep your eyes peeled!

Thanks to a reader for passing on from Bikestation:

Bikestation DC members: the Bike and Roll mechanics report that some of their fleet bikes were stolen this week overnight when their cable lock(s) were cut.

The parking room will now only be open during staffed hours M-Sa (7AM – 7PM) and Su (8Am – 7PM) until further notice.

Please report if you saw any suspicious activities inside such as loitering to us or the onsite staff.

All member bikes parked must be:
– securely locked to the rack with a u-lock or better. AND

– must have a current Bikestation parking sticker on the frame.

Double check your records to make sure you have a photo of your bike and your bike data: make, model, year and frame number on your smart phone.

The Bike and Roll staff (BnR) have given us an update on what they found today when the Bikestation DC opened.

The BnR fleet bikes were taken again. And other bikes [not locked to racks?] were moved around and onto other bikes.

We need ALL members to visit the Bikestation during shop hours to check on their bike.

BnR staff will also be physically locking the doors at night until this is resolved.

Bikestation will not be able to over ride this lock down remotely. So you MUST remove any bike that you need to ride when the shop is closed.”

Sweet Sweet Karma – Pennsylvania bike lane edition

“Biking home this evening, stopped at Penn and 10th when a driver decided to cut through the bikelanes about two feet behind me. After a brief exchange of words from both myself and the driver he proceeded to cut through the lanes nearly knocking me over. I’d like to think the colorful language and hand gestures I provided distracted him and that is why he didn’t notice the federal protective service SUV not 20 feet away.

Sweet sweet karma was watching him get pulled over to the applause of the rest of the bikers in the bikelane and the 30 or so pedestrians crossing the crosswalk.”

Leaving work last Wednesday, I got on a Capital Bikeshare and headed up to Capitol Hill. Crossing 7th Street NW and turning onto Pennsylvania Avenue something unfamiliar happened on this regular commute. I had to wait to enter the bike lane; there were six solo riders in line heading east. I would expect this kind of traffic on the National Mall a block south, but not on Penn. I prefer riding on Pennsylvania Avenue versus the Mall because it feels more mechanical; it offers a direct comparison to a car and I like it.

When Metro shut down for 24 hours to do inspections on the system, locals griped about riding the bus and surging Uber prices. But there was one system that was working to help the community stay connected, Capital Bikeshare. Since becoming a member, in August of 2013, I have taken 835 trips totaling 1,384 miles, burning an estimated 59,526 calories and saving 57.4 gallons of gas. As a quite dismal and fortunately retired bike racer, it’s not surprising that I would choose to bike over ride a bus, metro, or taxi. A bike has always been an opportunity to turn the aggravating task of commuting into a stimulating chance to work hard, be aware, and breathe fresh air. That is why I commute by bike. You should join me. (more…)

Lost Bike Hugs

“Dear PoPville,

On Saturday, February 27th, I had an appointment in Dupont Circle in the building right at the south exit of the Dupont metro station. I locked my bike up around 3:30pm and came back about 90 minutes later to see that it was gone. Although not a huge monetary loss (the bike was purchased for $75 on Craigslist three years prior), I certainly loved it, felt connected to it, and was very sad that it was suddenly gone.

Cut to today (Sunday, March 20th), my boyfriend and I are taking an early evening stroll around the Dupont Circle neighborhood, walking a circuitous way without a specific destination in mind. We were walking on Corcoran between New Hampshire and 19th Street when a carriage house in the alley caught our eye, so we went to check it out. As we continued to wander the alley, I saw a bright orange bike leaning — unlocked — against a garage door and I remarked to my boyfriend that it looked like my stolen one. And it was! Oddly, the seat was gone, but it was still in good shape and will be back to riding condition in no time.

As you can see, it was emotional.”

Awesome.
