Putting hose lines in place to protect homes on Quincy St NW, where fire is traveling uphill. Hose line used to protect a home on Quincy St NW towards which the brush fire was extending. All homes have been protected.”

Readers reported: “There was a very loud volley of automatic gun fire about 10-15 minutes ago (loud enough to scare my dog) and now there are a ton of cops at 14th and V. Emergency vehicles as well. Lit up like a Christmas tree and visible from my balcony 12th and V.”

Update from MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, in the 1400 block of V Street, Northwest.

At approximately 9:28 pm, Third District officers responded to the listed location for the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male shooting victim. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the adult male victim was pronounced dead. A second victim, an adult female, sought treatment, at a local hospital, for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The decedent has been identified as 29-year-old Marvin Johnson, Jr., of Northwest, DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.”

“confirmed shooting tonight on Piney Branch and Underwood. Three shots fired around 7:55. Helicopter is out flying low and about 8 police cars have blocked off Underwood st between 8th and Piney. Neighbor said he saw a body covered in a sheet.

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced that the rehabilitation of the Rock Creek Trail is now complete, offering bicyclists and pedestrians nearly 3 miles of reconstructed trail as well as a new 110-foot pedestrian bridge.

Originally expected to be completed in Spring 2023, the $14.6 million project was finished six months ahead of schedule. It rehabilitated more than 2.8 miles of the paved, multi-use trail, spanning from Wards 1 through 4 from M Street NW in Georgetown to Broad Branch Road NW. Read More

I’ve recently started commuting downtown by bike, and I wanted to get advice from others on the safest route. I live right off of 14th Street, so the most direct route is for me to go along 14th until I can cut over to the protected bike lanes on 15th Street. But biking through the section around DC USA is so insanely dangerous, especially northbound where cars and delivery trucks are constantly blocking the bike lane (and even the main travel lane). “Since 2013, when the National Park Service (NPS) began reducing the deer population in Rock Creek Park, the park’s tree seedling density has almost tripled. To continue to protect and restore native plants and promote healthy and diverse forests, Rock Creek Park will conduct deer management operations between Nov. 22, 2021, and March 31, 2022. 

During this period, the NPS plans to reduce deer populations in Rock Creek Park and other areas under Rock Creek Park’s management. These areas could include Melvin Hazen Park, Soapstone Valley Park, Pinehurst Parkway, Glover Archbold Park, Battery Kemble Park and Fort Totten Park, among others.

Extensive safety measures will be in place to protect park visitors and neighbors during operations. Read More
