Thanks to Ali for passing on:

“I saw your post a few weeks ago regarding the abysmal conditions of Piney Branch, and that inspired me to at least submit a request to DDOT since I too commute daily on that road. Over a month later, I finally received a response. Not extremely helpful, but at least we know that Piney Branch is not part of the Beach Drive project.

“This is in response to your email regarding the repaving on Piney Branch Road.

The repaving of Piney Branch will be a separate project, which is currently under design, and therefore, it is not part of the Beach Drive project.

As part of the Beach Drive project, we have been patching potholes throughout construction. As recent as last Saturday, November 4, the contractor filled in potholes on Piney Branch.

The grassy areas where the staging areas are located will be reestablished to preexisting condition after construction is done.”

“Dear PoPville,

As a resident of upper 14th St, like many commuters, I use Piney Branch Road to get to a Rock Creek Parkway on a daily basis. I am very appreciate that Rock Creek Parkway [Ed. Note: segment one] has been finished, however, I have never seen Piney Branch in worse shape in my ten years living here. It is a disaster! The amount of potholes, uneven pavement and crumbling asphalt is dangerous. Just last week, my partner flattened her tire when she hit a pothole. Further compounding matters, the construction crews repairing Rock Creek Parkway are using three locations on Piney Branch as staging locations for their equipment. These heavy, large-scale construction trucks and tractors are destroying Piney Branch. The road can simply not handle their extreme weight and constant travel back and forth. Read More

Susan reports:

“Rock Creek Parkway between piney branch parkway and downtown is open again. The road looks similar as before but smooth as buttah and all kinds of drainage/storm water management stuff. Path has all been redone, and seems a bit wider, at least where road permits it.”

From the National Park Service:

“New Beach Drive closures and detours begin Monday August 28

Beach Drive closes to all users (cars, bikes and pedestrians) between Park Road/Tilden Street NW and Joyce Road NW (just south of Military Road NW). Ross Drive and Ridge Road will also close to vehicles but will remain open to cyclists and pedestrians. Read More

Update on Brightwood’s Safeway from Council Member Muriel Bowser:

“About an hour ago, the Safeway located at Georgia Avenue and Piney Branch Road, NW has re-opened after correcting violations cited by the Department of Health.

The Department of Health has released their official report about the Safeway that can be found here.

I’m highly concerned with the observations made in this report. My priority is to ensure that only quality produce and groceries are available to the residents and families in our neighborhoods. I will be meeting with Safeway officials to demand and guarantee that they meet the standards that our community deserves.”

“Dear PoPville,

My partner and I got engaged on Sunday (10/8) around 11am, near the trailhead to Rock Creek/Piney Branch off 17th St. Just wondering if any of the neighbors might have caught the proposal on a porch cam. We would love to see it, thanks!”

If anyone does you can email me at [email protected] and I’ll pass it on to OP.
