“Dear PoPville,

I’m considering getting a bike for a few reasons (some pandemic related) but am trying to figure out if it’s feasible to ride to work when work resumes–I don’t want to invest in one and then let it sit in storage if things ever get back to normal. One possible route would take me down Rock Creek Park Trail between Porter St. and Georgetown (or between Calvert and Georgetown, depending on what I find out), and from all my research it’s hard to decipher whether or not this part of the trail is a safe, reliable route for someone on a hybrid/commuter bike during weekday commute hours (i.e. when Beach Drive isn’t blocked to cars). Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

Not sure if this is being encountered in DC or not, but I wanted to make readers aware of something that’s been going on in Crystal City. For the past month or so these homemade white nationalist stickers have been showing up on parking meters along a one mile stretch of road. Each is different and each is equally disturbing/offensive (these are examples of some of the tamer ones–with offensive language blacked out). (more…)

From a press release:

“Call Your Mother, Washington D.C.’s nationally renowned, locally grown “Jew-ish” deli, opens its first mobile kitchen, the Call Your Mother Trolley, Tuesday, July 14.

Also known as Honey, the original name of the antique streetcar, Call Your Mother’s bagel trolley is rolling into Bethesda, Maryland and parking next to Suburban Hospital at 8804 Old Georgetown Road. With social distancing in mind, guests can order bulk bagels and their favorite signature sandwiches ahead here or at the trolley. The full Call Your Mother menu will be available soon.

“It’s one of the old trollies that used to tour the city, but it’s no longer orange and green,” says Andrew Dana, Founder and Co-Owner of Call Your Mother. Instead, the trolley is outfitted in the brand’s emblematic pink and green meant to evoke “Boca-meets-Brooklyn” blending outstanding bagels and bright South Florida vibes. Some of South Florida’s well-known Jewish retirement homes are the inspiration behind the names of Call Your Mother’s quirky woodfire bagel sandwiches. (more…)

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

My kid goes to a school where all students receive free lunch. Because of this, our family is eligible to receive Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) benefits ($28.50 per week for the time school was not open because of the quarantine, mid-March to mid-June), even though our household income would normally make us ineligible for other food benefits. It can only be spent on food. I’d prefer the funds go to someone in greater need than us, but I’m not sure what the best way to ensure this is. (more…)
