“Dear PoPville,

I live on a fairly busy corner. It’s not a massive thoroughfare but it’s got it’s fair share of traffic, and it has a very long light. I’m probably noticing more because I’m working from home these days, but there are consistently a handful of cars that drive by without mufflers or with muffler amplifiers. They are INCREDIBLY loud and often during the early morning. Today, literally a small child started crying when a GT drove by with a muffler delete because she was so startled and scared of the noise. Traffic is loud enough as is and I know the DMV area does not permit any exhaust system amplification but I’m wondering if there’s an agency I can report the license plates to? As far as I can tell you can only report unsafe drivers.”

DC Government

From The Office of the Attorney General:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a lawsuit against Instacart, a grocery delivery service, for charging District consumers millions of dollars in deceptive service fees and for failing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in District sales tax. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) alleges that for a span of 18 months, Instacart failed to clearly disclose to consumers that optional service fees were added on their bills and led them to believe these fees were tips for their delivery workers. In fact, the fees were an extra revenue source for the company and did not increase workers’ pay. Additionally, OAG alleges that Instacart violated District tax law and failed to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales taxes on delivery and service fees it collected. OAG is seeking restitution for consumers who paid deceptive fees, back taxes and interest on taxes owed to the District, civil penalties and costs. (more…)

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

I recently purchased my first condo (yay!) that is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath where each room has its own bathroom. My hope is to rent out the second bedroom so that I can get some help with paying the mortgage, while I’d be living in the other bedroom of course.

My question is, being someone who knows absolutely nothing much about DC laws much less about renting, where do I start with renting out the room? (more…)

Zoo

Oh my goodness.

From the Smithsonian’s National Zoo:

“Big news! Last night, our Panda Team observed giant panda Mei Xiang approach the doorway of her den several times, “testing” her cub’s reaction to being placed on the floor. Then, early this morning, she twice left the den to get a drink of water–once at 4:27 a.m. and once at 5:59 a.m. Each time, she only spent about one minute away. Her brief reprieve offered Panda Cam viewers a great look at the growing cub! Upon her return, Mei Xiang immediately picked up her cub and cradled it.”

From an email: “As you may know, we had a fire at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bourbon Steak last Saturday. Our staff courageously packed up the food and ended up moving two weddings to the Watergate. With pretty extensive damage our team was devastated about when they would be able to return to work. We came together as a team and made lemons into lemonade by developing a very casual pop up concept run from Eno and into our garden. (more…)

Medical

explore data here

Ed. Note: Yesterday there were 13,722 total positives.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“The District’s reported data for Wednesday, August 26, 2020 includes 72 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 13,794.

The District reported no additional COVID-19 related deaths.

Tragically, 605 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The community spread chart is subject to fluctuation because the data is based on symptom onset date. As national demand for testing increases and results take longer to come back in DC and across the country, DC Health has identified a need to increase the reporting lag time by four days to reduce volatility in the data. The most recent data reflects an increase in community spread. To ensure this graph accurately reflects the most recent data, the community spread count is being paused as these adjustments are made.” (more…)
