From WUSA9:

“Union asking its DC teachers to take ‘mental health day’ Monday, questions DCPS’ reopening plan”

UPDATE from DCPS: “DC Public Schools has a responsibility to provide every student with an equitable, rigorous, and joyful education — no matter if they are learning at home or learning in school.

While we planned to offer in-person learning at the start of Term 2 for select elementary school students, this timeline will need to be adjusted. This means all students in grades PK-12 will now begin Term 2 on Monday, November 9 with learning at home. (more…)

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in D.C.

But obviously this is not a year for celebration. This is a year of perseverance. There have been more ups and downs this year to last a lifetime. And obviously we are not out of the woods yet. PoPville has become a place where people come, especially in times of tumult and uncertainty, to find out what is going on in their neighborhoods. And that is because of the community as a whole. That is because of you. When folks come here and to our social media pages it is because you guys have reported what you are seeing. I simply amplify it. But together we get answers.

Together we also support each other when we are down. It’s been a tough year for “togetherness”. I hope we, our District, and our country are able to bridge some of the many divides that have erupted this year (and before.) I hope our 15th year is a year of healing, literally and figuratively. We do not celebrate this year because so many are hurting, some are still dying. People are angry and rightfully so. I try to find the positive as often as possible but I will not ignore the negative. I only hope that 2021 becomes the year we start turning the tanker. I hope 2021 is the beginning of genuine action and ultimately healing. I hope 2021 eventually becomes a year of celebration. But until then we must remember to wear a mask, we must remember that Black Lives Matter and we must remember to vote.

With deepest sincerity, thank you for being a part of PoPville, thank you for persevering with us. Thank you for making it all possible.

Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.

The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.

Thanks to Sheila for sending her great candy shute from Woodley Park:

“We had lots of trick-or-treaters at the dragon’s mouth but it had to be one at a time, so a chute turned out to be a terrific way to see and fully appreciate each costume because they weren’t all bunched up together at the door! A pandemic silver lining!”

And Michael sends some “pumpkins on pulleys – 15th and V edition”: (more…)

Dear PoPville

Claire asks: “Any idea what this unidentified floating object is? Spotted from 9th and D NE just now. Hard to tell where it’s tethered, but maybe H and 5th or 6th?”

This is the famed imaging balloon of course! Our last sighting was September 2020. In March of 2020 we got to see the great view from up there.

Elliot also sent a shot earlier from H Street, NE: (more…)

Really, hopefully temporary sad news, from the really good people at Boundary Stone:

“Since March we have fought to be here for our employees and our neighborhood, which we have faithfully served for the past nine years. Thank you to everyone who has supported Boundary Stone and have been so generous to our staff. It truly has been impactful and has allowed us to delay having to write something like this for the last 8 months. Unfortunately with colder weather moving in, rising virus counts, and no relief on the horizon, we have made the truly agonizing decision to close Boundary Stone until further notice.

We will remain open until Wed Nov 25th when we will celebrate our 10th annual Thanksgiving tradition and end this epic run with our showing of The Last Waltz. We cannot predict what the future holds for gathering places like Boundary Stone, but we are hopeful that we will be welcoming you all again at some point. (more…)
