I spotted my first Cicada yesterday in Cleveland Park but apparently it is only a “straggler”. USAToday reported in March:
“As spring approaches, many Americans may be expecting the return of loud, swarming cicadas, but experts say there’s little to worry about this year. No major 13‑ or 17‑year cicada broods are set to emerge nationwide, though a small number of insects emerging in off years, known as stragglers, may still be buzzing about.” (more…)
“Just saw this shuttle with updated signage! Share the good news!”
Thanks to Andrew for sending (and other have been talking about) this “group set up a live stream of the Kennedy Center to monitor the Trump name removal.” (more…)
Your summer nights are about to get a lot more adventurous. Beginning June 27th, join us after hours at the National Geographic Museum of Exploration for a brand-new series of evening events. Here’s a first look at what’s coming up:
Celebrate the Museum of Exploration’s Grand Opening with a one-night-only, after-hours marketplace inspired by street festivals, night markets and bazaars around the world.
This FREE event will feature live music and DJ sets that bring the museum to life, along with food and beverage for purchase from international street food vendors and outdoor bars. Plus, hear from a National Geographic photographer on the fascinating stories behind their work.
Gather with friends, explore flavors from around the world, dance to live music under starlight and explore in a whole new way.
Exhibition Showcases are special evening events that bring National Geographic exhibitions to life through storytelling, conversation and performance. This summer we celebrate our premier exhibition, “Red, White & Blue”.
The evening will begin with a cocktail reception in Explorers Eatery alongside talks from featured Explorers and photographers. You will then explore our photography galleries for an exclusive private viewing. The experience will culminate with live performance inspired by the exhibition on view, offering time to explore the work in a unique way.
These celebrations end with FREE access to the Courtyard Nighttime Experience.
photo by Anthony Kelleher, Assistant Fire Chief of Operations, DC Fire and EMS: “fire extended through multiple buildings along 8th Street, SE/Barracks Row. Aggressive tactics, coordinated suppression/search operations, and strong command stopped the fire from spreading further.”
Ed. Note: The Ugly Mug closed here, 723 8th Street, SE, in October 2025.
DC Fire and EMS first reported around 8:15pm: “Working Fire : 700 Block of 8th Street SE – Two story row house with smoke and fire showing from rooftop deck with exposure to adjacent structure.”
Crafted & Poured brings people together through hands-on creative experiences in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Whether you’re coming with friends, planning a date night, or attending solo, you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people, enjoy a drink, and create something you’ll take home at the end of the evening.
You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in D.C.

Thanks to a reader for passing on from U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC):
“Proper Ventures, LLC and WSRZ Proper, LLC, operators of a restaurant chain in Washington known as Proper 21, violated federal law when it fired a floor manager while she was on maternity leave, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit announced today.
Seen near Foggy Bottom Metro, June 9. Was there not a court order to get rid of Trump’s name?”
CNN reported: “For now, the large lettering on the building’s facade still features “Donald J. Trump.” But the Kennedy Center’s general counsel said in a memo to staff that they have until June 12 to remove it to comply with the court order.”
