Blagden Alley Naylor Court Association shares all the details from owners Geoff Dawson and Brian Leonard:

“District Lost and Found (DL&F), locating at 1240 9th St., NW, will be a neighborhood gathering spot very much in the same style as Nanny O’Brien’s in Cleveland Park. We hope to build a core business that primarily serves our nearby residents. While we will not have a full service kitchen our aim will be to provide a robust selection of snacks and appetizers. We also intend to use our food capabilities from sister businesses such as Ripple and Nanny O’s to provide unique menu items. We will focus on offering a hardy beer and wine menu, with particular focus on the craft beer market.”

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“La colombe gets a sign. Mid jan open date… Hopefully!”

We’ve been counting down since Halloween but we’re really getting close. I’ve done a bunch of end of the year interviews asking about what I’m most looking forward to in 2014 – and I keep forgetting about this spot – so I’ll just say it here – I can’t freaking wait!

La Colombe will be located in Blagden Alley next to Rogue 24.

In early November it was looking like Dunya was ready to open any day – well it took about a month but they’re finally open. Their website says:

“Dear PoPville,

My friend and I are considering renting a two-bedroom basement unit in Shaw. The unit itself is amazing: 1000+ square feet, all newly renovated in a beautiful old apartment building, with lots of windows receiving light from southern and eastern exposures, and a washer and dryer, all at a very reasonable price — about double the square footage we’re seeing in other properties around the same price. The only catch: no window bars anywhere, at all.

We’ve asked the landlord if they’re willing to install them, but received a response saying no, that it’s too difficult given historic district regulations.

My question: is there a good number of people living in basement units without window bars that have had no problems or break-ins whatsoever? Also, if you don’t have bars, is there anything you’ve done to make the place safer?

This place really is a steal, and we both love it. We’re just very concerned about the safety issue. Advice appreciated!”

8th and T Street, NW

It’s been a long time coming but All Souls Corner Bar is finally opening up at the corner of 8th and T St, NW. Yesterday I spoke with owner David Batista who shares the good news that they got their Certificate of Occupancy and will be opening in the “next few days.”

It’s another incredible transformation of a derelict property:

October 2011

From their Facebook page:

“All Souls seeks to be a neighborhood bar. We’re not a sports bar, a gastropub, a wine bar, a speakeasy or a restaurant. We will be none of these things, yet we will have something for everyone. You will be able to find the craft beers of a gastropub and the interesting labels of a wine bar. If you prefer a cocktail it will be crafted with care and attention to detail. The food will be simple, but elevated, not your typical bar food. And you’ll be able to enjoy all of it while listening to good, eclectic music or watching the game quietly playing in the background.

With over thirty years experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry, our experiences range from serving beers in small bars to working alongside James Beard Award winning chefs. We have done it all from washing dishes to running multimillion dollar restaurants. Our experience working in restaurants is where our concept originates.

The basic premise of All Souls is to take restaurant quality service and adapt it to a bar setting. Attention to detail, friendliness and a commitment to serve the highest quality drink and food are the heart of what we want to do.”

bar

Batista tells me there will be 4 draft beers, 12 beers in cans and bottles and 12 wines in addition to a cocktail menu, which will feature the “classics with a twist.” As far as food is concerned, to start there will be a small sampling of snacks to include olives, nuts, cheese etc. and these options will expand a bit over time. But this is not a restaurant – it’s a proper corner bar. It’s incredibly refreshing to hear a place like this opening. No themes here just a very cool gathering spot. Additionally there will be a jukebox with an eclectic mix of soul, old soul, R&B, Rock and Jazz. Hours will be Mon.-Thurs. 5pm – 2am, Friday 5pm – 3am, Sat. 1pm-3am, and Sun. 1pm-2am.

I can’t freaking wait.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

639 Florida Avenue, NW

Over the summer we learned a new Asian restaurant, IChing, was coming to 639 Florida Ave, NW by the Howard Theatre. I’m happy to share an update from the owner:

“The Philosophy for IChing is simple, it stands for change on how to accomplish balance, harmony, prosperity, happiness, and longevity. IChing is a teaching that combines between Taosim and Confucius wisdom dated back to 3000 B.C. Today it is known also known to be use in, what is call Feng-Shi.This area is changing very fast and I like to bring all those elements into our cooking and happiness to our community.

This has been a long project for me. We are at the construction phase. We were suppose to be due to open in fall 2013. Our plans have been delay, this building is so old. There is a lot of work to be done for the safety of patrons. We are now looking till sometime in March 2014. The poster that we had posted up was to get a vibe from the neighborhood, and it work. People are curious of the Chinese boy. The meaning of this poster is to give an idea of something ancient, and Asia. He is also waiting at the step of the front door to be unlock. This establishment will be a friendly neighborhood restaurant that you can bring your family, friends, or for a business meeting.

Our cuisine is Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Japanese. My executive chef is a born Japanese. His name his Munehiro Mori. Experince for 30 years.(Cashion’s, Raku, Asia Nora, Wolfgang Puck. His cooking introduces cross-cultural ingredients with the same spirit of innovation with a European flair. We are very exited!”
