Per a reader request from MPD:
“The Metropolitan Police Department seeks the public’s assistance in identifying a pair of individuals in reference to a Robbery-Fear incident which occurred at the 10th Street Market, located at 1000 S Street, NW, on Monday, November 4, 2013. The subjects were captured by the store’s surveillance cameras as they entered the cashier’s booth. The subjects are described as follows:
S-1: Black male in his 20s, 5’10” tall, and thin build. He was wearing an earring in his left ear, light-colored sweater, a black skull, tan boots, and dark brown jeans.
S-2: Black male in his late 20s to early 30s, and medium build. He was wearing a dark puffy parka coat with a hood, and a black baseball cap with white brim.”

Now I’m not one who gets easily excited by new… ok, just kidding, I get very excited about new openings all the time. Having said that Right Proper is the real freaking deal. I believe this has the potential to be the coolest thing to come to Shaw since Duke Ellington used to hang out here. And I’ll be honest, I meet a lot of nice people opening places. A few are a bit douchey but the vast majority are extremely nice. The guys behind Right Proper are the nicest of the nice. It’s hard to explain, and you’ll get it immediately when you meet them, but they just have a genuineness and kindness without pretense that makes you want to root for them. And the fact that this is a brew pub makes me want to root for them even more. Fortunately as you’ll soon see from the photos – they don’t need my rooting – this place is already awesome and it’s opening December 10th (if all goes according to plan, knock wood, knock wood.)
We will revisit when all is cleaned up but this will give you a taste of the space. There is room for 155. When you walk in you’ll see a small bar, another small bar then in the back a large bar with a view into the brewing area. The back will also have proper tables. There will be 6 right proper brews and two guest taps that will rotate. And you can buy beer to go! And murals. And awesome details. Well have a look:

November 2010
Update: “The first 500 shoppers through the register tomorrow receive a $10 gift card.” Doors open 10am.
From a press release:
“Grand opening, ribbon cutting ceremony and six-week long celebration at the Giant at O Street Market in Washington, D.C., Thursday, November 21st at 6:00pm. [The store opens to the public tomorrow November 22]
Giant will make a donation of $2,500 to Bread for the City, a local organization making a big difference in the community during Thursday’s Grand Reopening Celebration.
The Historic O Street Market, built in 1881 and once a bustling meeting place for politicos, city vendors, and Washingtonians, is marking its vibrant return to the Shaw neighborhood. The cornerstone of this development is the new, 72,000-square foot Giant Food—one of the largest grocery stores in the District. The new Giant at O street market combines the charm of a 19thcentury marketplace with 21st century efficiency and innovation.
Over the next four weekends, Giant at O Street Market customers will enjoy raffles, tastings, prizes, and more.
Giant is dedicated to improving and growing its stores in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Throughout its 77 year history, Giant has remained committed to providing the highest level of quality, value, and service to its customers. Giant opened its first store in 1936, in the District of Columbia.
The Giant at O Street Market includes a café with Wi-Fi and a seating area above the historic market-style produce aisles. Shoppers will enjoy an extensive beer and wine section, offering high-end, selections that can be taken home, enjoyed in the café or while perusing the aisles for the week’s dinners. More than 1,400 selections of wine from around the globe will be available in the updated beverage section. Other great features include a large natural and organic section, an expanded deli featuring sandwiches made to order and a hot pizza bar, and a fresh sushi bar. The store will also have convenient and neighborhood-friendly below-grade parking.
More than a quarter of the new store, including the produce section, resides under the historic O Street Market structure. Original brick masonry was used in the design of the exterior wall, along with reconstructed steel trusses and the original roof design, recreated from archival photos. A clear skylight above the original market area overlooks the current produce section, similar to the natural light of the original structure.
Listed on both the National Register of Historic Place and the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites, the O Street Market remains one of only two 19th century public markets still standing in the District.”
I was able to get an updated sneak preview yesterday, have a look:

“Dear PoPville,
I came home Tuesday night to find a decent sized blaze had taken hold on the pile of leaves that had gathered along my fence (raked on Friday, resistance is futile).
Some good neighbors had already stopped and called the Fire Department when I got there, but I was too consumed with trying to make sure the fire didn’t spread further to get their names.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m grateful to live in a neighborhood where people look out for each other. These Good Samaritans will certainly be in our thoughts and my wife and I would like to send them a token of our appreciation.
If you could post this and help connect us, we would greatly appreciate it. Happy Thanksgiving DC!
Warmest Regards,
Inhabitants of the Green Monster, who are also thankful for the fast response of DCFD and MPD.”

From one of the owner’s of Dacha Beer Garden:
“Dacha Needs Your Help!
You asked, and we answered! Dacha is planning to build a small building with a kitchen and proper bathrooms to better serve our customers, while preserving the green outdoor space that makes Dacha so great.
BUT WAIT!
The DC Historic Preservation Office is requiring that we extend the building to cover the entire outdoor space. Their vision would enclose the beer garden and cover a significant portion of the Elizabeth Taylor mural we’ve all grown to love.
See the pictures to better understand our position. A beer garden with no sun is no beer garden at all!
Please support us! E-mail the Mayor and HPRB the following:
“Hon. Mayor Gray,
I/We support the design for the new Dacha Beer Garden building as submitted to HPRB and not the one Historic Preservation imposes. Please do not let them ruin the mural and destroy the green open space we like so much.”

Thanks to a neighbor for sending word that they received a letter about a meeting to discuss the Rito Loco burrito food truck who are planning on opening a restaurant in the former Reese’s barbershop space next to Bistro/Kafe Bohem near the Howard Theatre. I also emailed one of the owners who confirmed they signed a lease Oct. 1st and plan on opening mid-April. And they will continue to run their food truck as well.
Their website says:
“Welcome to the world of Rito Loco. A unique and creative burrito company. We use nothing but the freshest ingredients to fuel our homemade recipes. Everything is made from scratch and with love. Secret family recipes have been passed on for years and cultivated into the BEST BURRITO’s in D.C. We offer flavors from around the world that will excite your mouth and create a higher standard for the local burrito lover.”
You can see their food truck menu here.
Any fans of the food truck?
Updates as construction progresses.

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to send along a pop up that is on Richardson Pl NW (corner of Florida / RI ave). I sold my house on the street a few years ago because it was so small (650sq ft) and now this is being built and they are asking almost a million for it! The photo’s make it look a little more in scale, but from the side it is HUGE.”

“Dear PoPville,
Since reading your post regarding guest parking passes, I’ve been waiting to receive mine but it’s never arrived. Today I called DOT to learn that residents in Zone 2 (I live in Shaw) will not receive these passes. Do you know anything about this? Please tell me it’s not true and it’s all a bad dream.”

I got some really sweet scuttlebutt from a pretty reliable source yesterday. They hear one of the restaurant spaces for City Market at O will be filled by the folks behind Mintwood Place in Adams Morgan. You can see Mintwood’s menu here. Mintwood Place was recently named best new restaurant at the 2013 RAMMY Awards.
Another reliable source says that they hear one of the restaurant spots could be taken by Top Chef season 7 winner Kevin Sbraga:
“a New Jersey native and winner of Bravo’s, Top Chef (season 7) Washington D.C. By September 2011, he became the chef-owner of Sbraga, a modern American restaurant on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia.”
You can see Sbraga’s menu here.
It’s not clear if there is room for both of these restaurants or only one. Looking forward to learning more! Updates when new info becomes available.
