piassa

Back in January we learned that Piassa had closed, contributing to the 9th Street Massacre. The bleeding has officially stopped. Washingtonian reports:

“Kroll hopes to make his wine bar stand out from the pack with a rotation of offbeat themes. One month, half of the 5o wines by the glass (or half-glass) may all come from islands. Another month, he might feature wines from volcanic soil or “ABPG” (Anything But Pinot Grigio) indigenous white grapes from Italy.”

Earlier this week a reader snapped a photo and wrote:

“Sure looks like they’re building a bar of some sort in the old piassa space.”

Updates as he gets closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I live in the 1500 block of 5th St, NW, in Shaw. Recently, the area’s seen a huge increase in the number of package thefts reported in the Third District. In fact, on the first day that we installed a security camera, we saw someone stealing packages from our front porch (it happened on 1/5/17). We filed a police report but haven’t had any luck identifying the person responsible.

On March 16, 2017, we were struck again by package thieves – this time they were two young black men (late teens or early 20s). I’ve attached the video of this latest left in hopes of drawing attention to this disturbing trend and to hopefully identify the perpetrators. In the video it looks like one of them has a DC Water ID tag hanging from his pants’ pocket. Please let us know if you recognize these two individuals!”

clean up signs popville

Thanks to Tim for sending the update: “There is a new sign up next to the you need a boyfriend one. He should just clean up his back yard.”

Last week we shared the saga between a neighbor(s) and the restaurant owner of Corduroy and Baby Wale in Shaw. To be honest I’m kinda speechless. Don’t get me wrong it’s beautiful in a Middle School tantrum sort of way and I certainly don’t condone throwing eggs, if indeed that happened, but Jesus Fracking Christ. Seriously? This all feels like a very Trumpian reaction. To what end I ask? What is the purpose? What does one hope to gain by such action? Such provocation. Will this improve the impasse? Bridge the divide? I don’t fracking think so. So, to gain publicity? Maybe. I know that restaurant competition has heated up in Shaw but there’s gotta be a better way. Anyway, wishing peace to all parties before we regress to Elementary school.

Update from owner of Baby Wale via email:

“My goal has never been to get publicity out of this situation. I have not contacted any media outlet first. Attached are photos of how we found our cars Friday night at 11:30 PM. Looks to me that the eggs were thrown from the Whitman. Not sure where the concern for the cleanliness of the alley was in that action. I think rats like eggs too.”
