An awesome transformation is coming to the former Written Word space at 1926 17th St, NW just south of U Street not far from the Hana Japanese Market. I chatted with the owner yesterday who says the spot will be called Bakery 350 and if all goes well should open in early November. Updates as they get closer to opening.

Last week we noted Duke’s Grocery was coming soon to the former Cafe Green space on 17th Street. Well, today’s the day. I stopped in yesterday for some preview photos and the space does not disappoint.
From a press release:
“Duke’s Grocery is a social market and pub located in the heart of Dupont Circle’s 17th Street community. Taking inspiration and cues from old European counters, especially those in East London, Duke’s will serve a seasonal market menu featuring scratch made sandwiches, salads and sides.
Chef-Partner Alex McCoy’s kitchen will emphasize local ingredients and house made products. The quality-driven market menu features scratch made sandwiches, comfort sides and seasonal salads with fresh produce from Potomac Farm Market. We are proud to feature fresh produce from Potomac Farm Market, craft beers from local breweries and fresh bread from Lyon Bakery and Georgetown Bagelry.
The beverage program will feature new spins on classic cocktails. The Perfect Storm, our version of a dark and stormy, features house made ginger-chili syrup; the Shoreditch Fizz, is made with citron vodka, prosecco, limoncello, anisette, fresh lemon and basil.
Guests can grab fresh fruit and vegetables from the Grocery Table, curated by Potomac Farm Market, which will also provide produce for McCoy’s kitchen.
Italian espresso drinks will come courtesy of a vintage ECM machine and a full English Breakfast, along with house made pastries and cakes, will soon be available all day.
OPENING HOURS:
Monday – Thursday: 11:00AM to 2:00AM
Friday – Saturday: 11:00AM to 3:00AM
Sunday: 11:00AM to 2:00AM
Breakfast and Brunch: Coming soon.”

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to let you know how thrilled I am that shaws tavern has lowered their beer prices down to a reasonable level. I know dc is expensive and I’m not one to complain about it, but when I saw shaws beer prices were way out of line with similar locales, it pissed me off.
So, I am so excited that their prices are good now, and happy hour draft beers are still $2 off!
I specifically remember that Boston lager was $7, magic hat was $9, and pbr was $5. Now they are all cheaper!”

“Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) is proud to announce it will deepen its ties to the Washington, DC metropolitan area when it brings Shake Shack® locations to Union Station – Washington, DC and Tysons Corner in Northern Virginia. Both Shacks are slated to open in mid 2014.
Prominently located in the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood, Shake Shack Union Station will be in the original West Hall of the restored and revitalized landmark building, which dates back to 1907.”
Shake Shack currently has locations at 9th and F St, NW in the Spy Museum and at 1216 Connecticut Ave, NW.

Ben’s Chili Bowl just celebrated their 55th anniversary on U Street and work has started on a second location on H Street to be located on the corner of 10th and H St, NE. Now comes word that a third location could be in the works.
@toddkliman tweeted the scuttlebutt on Friday:
“Inside dope for #DCrestaurant fans: I’m hearing that the new occupant of the original Ray’s the Steaks space will be Ben’s Chili Bowl.”
The original Ray’s the Steaks was located at 1725 Wilson Blvd in Arlington, VA.

Smoothie King opened up in the former Alberto’s pizza space at 2438 18th St, NW back in April 2012. They’ve now closed on 18th Street but are still open at 1621 Connecticut Ave, NW. Word on the street is that a new Japanese restaurant is taking over the space and will be specializing in Donburi:
“a Japanese “rice bowl dish” consisting of fish, meat, vegetables or other ingredients simmered together and served over rice.”
Updates when they get closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,
Just wanted to let you know that Mandalay (the amazing Burmese restaurant in Silver Spring) is opening its new Shaw location (1501 9th Street NW) on Sunday!
Mandalay will be celebrating its opening day with five sittings that will be a fixed meal for $25 cash (they’re not sure whether their credit card machines will be up and running by then). As of this morning, only the 11am, 1pm, and 8:30pm seating still have openings.
Reservations can be made through a link on Mandalay’s website.
The system for making a reservation is a bit complicated and involves clicking on a link next to the specific seating time you’re interested in and logging in using an event ID and password (both of which are provided next to the link on the website).
If anyone in the party has dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, pescetarian), there are a series of Google Drive documents where you can enter your preference.”

Back in May we were told plans for tacos had switched to plans for a German beer garden at the vacant lot not next to Dodge City on U Street. This is from the same owners as Marvin, Gibson, Chez Billy, Satellite Room, Hanoi House. Well, plans are back to tacos and the space is no longer an empty lot:

I’m told they are now shooting for a November opening.
Looks like they’ll have a takeout window too:

From what I understand this taqueria will have a mighty fine selection of craft beer too. Stay tuned.
