“Dear PoPville,

We’ve been to Domku a few times recently and keep peeking in to see the progress on Petworth Citizen. Looks a little quiet. Do you have an update on the opening?”

I spoke with owner Paul Ruppert (Room 11, Passenger etc.) who tells me they’ve made nice progress and are on track to open around the first week of October (knock wood, knock wood.)

“Petworth Citizen” is inspired by the community newspaper of the same name that chronicled Petworth neighborhood happenings from 1916 – 1951. “Petworth Citizen” will be a neighborhood bar (829 Upshur St, NW) with great bar food and a literary focus. The name also points to our intention to become a gathering place, welcoming neighbors from near and far.”

And in possibly even bigger news the unnamed spot from Mr. Ruppert located across the street should open about three months after the Petworth Citizen opens. They’ve recently applied for a liquor license which says:

“Restaurant serving a chef – driven menu of Japanese-French inspired food and cocktails. Seating capacity and total load of 25.”

More info as they get closer to opening. If you’ll excuse me for a few moments I’m going to go weep with joy…

A couple years ago we spoke about the best pizza delivery options in DC. But for today I want to know what are your favorite non-pizza delivery options? Lately my favorite delivery is Greek Spot at 11th and U St, NW. Tons of restaurants have been opening up the last few years – any of them have a good delivery option? In addition to your overall favorite – what are the favorite fastest options too? And a brief side note – how much do you/should you tip the delivery guy?

From an email:

“Boqueria DC is saying farewell to summer and ringing in fall with a brand new lunch menu. The debut menu will feature Boqueria’s classic tapas dishes, such as Pan con Tomate, Gambas al Ajillo and Croquetas Cremosas, as well as a new selection of Ensaladas, Bocatas (sandwiches), and Bikinis (pressed sandwiches).

Seasonal salads include highlights such as Berza y Zanahorias, kale, cumin, roasted carrots, pomegranate, sunflower seeds with labne yogurt dressing and Hinojo y Citricos, shaved fennel, citrus, avocado, pine nuts and sherry vinaigrette; while the new Bocatas and Bikini sections of the menu feature mouthwatering options like Atun con Mojo Canario, seared tuna, avocado, jalapeño, mojo verde on a brioche bun; Albondigas con Queso, lamb meatballs, sheep’s milk cheese, fresh tomato sauce, cucumber and basil on a toasted baguette; and Jamon Serrano y Trufa, Serrano ham and truffled fresh cow’s milk cheese, pressed and grilled on pullman bread.”

Back in July we learned more about Duke’s Grocery coming to the former Cafe Green space in Dupont Circle. I checked in with the owners who say they will be “opening soon” but more interestingly they’ve posted a sample food menu.

And while first floor is looking good:

The sandwiches are looking freaking amazing:

Yes! Work has finally started at the former Y.E.S.S.S. Uniforms space in Bloomingdale. And some scuttlebutt I’m hearing is starting off 5774 very sweetly indeed. This is pretty prime space located down the block from Rustik, around the corner from Red Hen, across the street from Showtime and in between Grassroots Bakery and Boundary Stone. I’m hearing it is going to become a Tex-Mex restaurant and there could be some connection from the owners of Sticky Rice. Think Tex-Mex would be a good addition to the burgeoning dining scene in Bloomingdale?

It’s been a while since we had an update on the status of the new restaurant from the owner of Thai-Xing coming to 9th Street by the 9:30 Club. I finally ran into some workers last weekend and they said if all goes well they should be able to open in November. I get asked quite frequently – ‘what new restaurant/bar am I most looking forward to opening?’ – well, this is it. Here’s hoping everything runs smoothly from here!

Back in April we learned that the old Third Edition space would become an El Centro.  We judged the Logan Circle El Centro at 1819 14th St, NW back in Aug. 2011.

From a press release:

“El Centro D.F. will open a second location of its vibrant Taqueria and Tequileria at 1218 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, 20007 in Georgetown on Friday, September 6th. Renowned chef and restaurateur Richard Sandoval is working with Chef Juan Romero to showcase his popular Mexican comfort food, full of authentic flavors found throughout his homeland. New dishes will be introduced on the Georgetown menu along with house-infused tequilas. Diners can anticipate over 270 different types of tequila and mezcal, handcrafted margaritas and classic Latin cocktails to pair with Sandoval’s enticing menu.

The Georgetown El Centro D.F. is similar in design to its sister restaurant on 14th Street, with the addition of a secluded outdoor patio that can seat 55 guests. Spread over two floors, the restaurant can accommodate 59 guests on the first level and 99 guests on the second. For this project, architect and designer, Brie Husted, drew inspirations from traditional Mexican towns. “El Centro D.F. Georgetown embodies the spirit of Mexico City,” says Husted. “The ground floor features a wooden vaulted ceiling with masonry wall structure, reclaimed wooden tables and comfortable benches. The upper level has a café sentiment with reclaimed wood lathe and custom murals created using old wood, used metal and Mexican newspapers. The garden patio has old world charm with ivy climbing up a neighboring brick wall, a large bar and a fire bit.” (more…)

Back in August of last year a reader noted that the former Senor Chicken space was for lease in DC USA. Well they finally got a new tenant – I spoke with the owners who told me it will be a “sushi and banh mi” restaurant. Could be awesome – I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the food is solid. Updates as they get closer to opening.

Senor Chicken originally opened back in November 2009.
