Back in July we learned more about Duke’s Grocery coming to the former Cafe Green space in Dupont Circle. I checked in with the owners who say they will be “opening soon” but more interestingly they’ve posted a sample food menu.

And while first floor is looking good:

The sandwiches are looking freaking amazing:

I like that blue paint job and the copper counters are gorgeous!

That menu does look delicious! Watch out Dupont Market, there is a new player in the hood.

Having personally tasted the chef’s cooking previously, I can attest to how awesome this place is going to be! So excited for the opening!

Sad to see no vegan options on the menu. Cafe Green was a hopping place and only closed because of tax issues (tisk tisk) not because of a lack of business–wish they would keep the legacy going with a couple of creative vegan dishes. Especially given this has Indian influences, it wouldn’t be too difficult! A vegan chana masala or eggplant dish or something with potatoes?

I am vegan, most of my friends are not…we won’t eat out at any restaurant that doesn’t have real vegan options (beyond a salad)–so I think it is to the benefit of all restaurants to have at least one creative vegan dish–it’ll help business, I promise.

I’m sympathetic that it must be tough to find good restaurants, but the restaurant is there to make money, not to cater to alternative diets. Last thing we need on 17th street is another mediocre joint that will close down in a year or two. Veganism is just tough. It really is something that isn’t natural to humans so it will be a long time before there are solid options on the menu.

You should check out Malgudi, the new South Indian place that opened just around the corner. Lots of interesting vegetarian options, probably some vegan though I’m not sure.
