Yesterday a reader reported:

“I was at the Dupont Circle Ping Pong on Sunday, and the waitress told us that they would be closing. She did not indicate how soon it would be occurring, but she did say that the Chinatown location would be remaining open.

I was surprised because it seems like the Dupont location does good business – thought others might be interested to know!”

And this morning another reader passes on confirmation from the building management:

“As of today January 20, 2016 Ping Pong Dim Sum restaurant located at One Dupont Circle will officially close its doors for business.

We are actively moving forward to identify a new tenant for the space.”

Ping Pong opened their Dupont location back in 2011 and their first DC location opened at 900 7th Street, NW in Chinatown back in Dec. ’09.

Looks like plans for a strip club, then cigar lounge have now become plans for The Liberator. A new liquor license placard posted out front says:

“Multi-level restaurant and bar featuring a fusion of modern Irish and European cuisines with a seating capacity for 370 patrons. Total Occupancy Load of 470. Requesting an Entertainment Endorsement.”

Books and Beer – doesn’t get much better than that!! Check it out – from The Midlands:

“Trent Allen, Robin Webb and Peyton Sherwood from the Kangaroo Boxing Club have partnered together again for a new project opening this spring. “The Midlands” will be a restaurant with a large outdoor beer garden in the Park View neighborhood at 3333 Georgia Ave NW. Patrons will have draft selections of greater than 15 and less than 30 taps, wine of the fermented grape variety, featuring red, white and pink. The menu will feature hand-crafted, gourmet, chef-driven, small-batch sandwiches from the future, that are totally not pretentious.”

I was wondering what was going on at the former Yummi Crawfish (puro cafe) before that – found lots of info from their design team:

“Once in a while we hear of a project that touches close to home and one of our latest clients, Zannchi is just that. A team of two young, inspired, Georgetown MBA students reached out to us to help bring their dreams into reality. What they have created is a fresh, new concept Korean restaurant that will be sure to grab the attention of any food fan in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Having family from Korea we were able to draw from family experience and trips abroad to create a amazing dining experience that will compliment the amazing food that will be served. Its been a pleasure working with their team and we cannot wait for the grand opening in a few short weeks. You can find their restaurant right in the heart of Georgetown on Wisconsin Avenue. The expected opening date is the second week of February so be sure to stop by and check out what big dreams and amazing execution can create. We have a few surprises in terms of the design and you will want to keep posted to see the big finished reveal. Lee Design and Interiors proudly serving DC, Virginia, Maryland and abroad for over 30 years!”

In October I begged Ogawa to open up. My prayers have finally been answered according to a worker on the scene – he says Ogawa, Traditional Japanese Sushi and Washoku Sushi, should be good to go on Monday!  This is the the former Pines of Florence space and Ogawa is from the owners of the incredibly awesome Sushi Capitol on Capitol Hill.  We first heard they were coming back in Oct. 2014. All indications are this will definitely be worth the wait:

From an email:

“I’m excited to share that Pennsylvania 6 DC [1350 I Street, NW] will be launching its brunch menu this Saturday, January 16.

The unique element to this brunch will be the Champagne Bar which will be held in the chandelier-dripping, Oxford Room. The Champagne Bar will be flowing with mixers and garnishes such as tropical juices, artisan elixers like elderflower syrups and delectable fruit slices. Not your typical bottomless brunch but more of an upscale champagne tasting with contemporary American brunch fare. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I live across the street from veranda and it’s been closed for a week. What’s going on!?!? Is it permanently closed?”

Just heard from the owner and I’m happy to say they’ll just be closed for 2-3 weeks to refresh the space:

“It has been nine years and we needed to update ourself to catch up with the new development in the neighborhood.”

Stay tuned for a reopening date.
