joselito
660 Pennsylvania Ave, SE

From a press release:

“ABOUT JOSELITO CASA DE COMIDAS: Joselito Casa de Comidas, located at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, was created by Javier Candon to bring a piece of Spain to the Eastern Market neighborhood of Capitol Hill. It is an intimate 70 seat eatery reminiscent of the timeless establishments found throughout Spain at the turn of the century.

The restaurant will hold a “soft opening” from Monday, January 9 to Sunday, January 15. During these days, we will offer guests a 20 percent discount on our food. From Monday, January 9 to Wednesday, January 11, we will be open only for dinner from 5:30- 10 p.m. Beginning Thursday, January 12, we will be open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and from 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

OUR INSPIRATION: The restaurant is an homage to Javier’s late father, José, who enjoyed long, leisurely family meals at restaurants that had an “old school” feel and a warm, casual, and inviting ambiance. “Joselito” was José’s childhood nickname, as well as the name of one of his favorite bullfighters (Joselito el Gallo) and a popular child actor in the 50s in Spain (José Jiménez Fernández).

OUR CUISINE: Our menu features traditional family recipes from Spain, but prepared with the modern techniques of today. Most of the dishes on the menu are offered in three sizes—tapa (equivalent to an appetizer size), media ración (entree) and ración (family style portion)—so that guests can craft their own culinary journey.

HEMINGWAY HOUR: We offer our “Hemingway Hour” daily from 4-7 in the evening. Guests can enjoy everything on the menu with a 20 percent discount. (more…)

On Friday we learned that the famed Florida Avenue Grill property would be sold at auction on Wednesday January 18, 2017. They were packed on New Years and their last Facebook post makes no mention of the auction:

Another reader notes:

“I was trying to figure out what was going on with the Fla Ave Grill and came across a 2009 NYT article on the owner, seems its not his first brush with this.”

We will obviously update with any news on what happens Wednesday January 18th.

And in other Florida Avenue Grill memories. Another reader notes:

“…I just watched D.C. Cab on HBO go for the first time in about 15 years and there are pretty extended scenes shot in what looks to be the actual interior of the grill. Also there are pretty amazing exterior shots as well. They also show National Airport, embassy row, U street and what looks like may have been Chinatown or Union Market area. The final scene is a parade outside of the “District Building” starring the Cardozo Marching Band. It’s all topped off with a special thanks to D.C. And Mayor Barry. I highly recommend the cult classic!”

2nd and Florida Ave, NW

From a press release:

“Co-owners Scott Jacobs, Melvin Hines and the Southeast Restaurant Group (SERG) are fired up and ready to announce January 4th as opening of the all new DCity Smokehouse location.

Located at 203 Florida Ave NW, the popular eatery will once again offer the best in barbecue, but at in even greater capacity than before. While the last location (8 Florida Ave NW, which closed in December 2015) was mostly a carry-out spot with just a few counter seats, the new restaurant boasts a full bar and seating for 35 inside. Better yet, the seating will more than double when spring comes as the patio opens with seating for 45.

What to expect?

Restaurant-goers will be happy to find the same menu items that first made DCity Smokehouse such a hit when it originally opened in 2013. The menu will include staple sandwiches such as the Meaty Palmer (turkey, pork belly, avocado, tomato, chipotle aioli at $10), the Brisket Champ (sliced smoked brisket, pickles, crispy onions, house bbq sauce at $10), the DCity Halfsmoke (half smoke sausage, brisket chill, nacho cheese, yellow mustard) and more, see the full menu below. The menu will also see the return of platters but this time, around instead of the option of just one side, platters now come with two or more sides. Some standouts include the Showstopper (rib tips, brisket, smoked wings, and three sides at $30), and the Ribs and Wings Combo (spare ribs, pit smoked wings and two sides at $15). Meat will be smoked daily in two J & R smokers, one using hickory and cherry wood to smoke the pork and poultry and the other will handle the ribs, brisket and pork with the help of mild white and red oak woods.

What’s new?

While DCity will mostly focus on it’s tried and true staples, the menu will also see a couple additions like the Mac and Jack Cheese ($3/$6). As one of the biggest selling points, DCity is going above and beyond the call of a standard smokehouse with in-house baking. The bread, a cross between a milk bun and a yeast roll, will serve as the perfect complement to the meats.

Continues with full menu after the jump. (more…)

From an email:

“Dear DC,

When people ask me “why DC?” my immediate response is always “DC chose me.” And it did. I came to this city because of the energy. The Shaw Bijou’s vision was simply an extension of a 5-year dream of ours; and while achieving that goal, we fostered an environment and restaurant that was not reasonable for all.

So, with the spirit of the New Year, we adjusted our concept with the people of DC in mind. In order to continue to invite and welcome people into our home, The Shaw Bijou, will now only offer a 7 course-tasting menu, which includes a welcome cocktail, for $95 beginning Tuesday, January 3. 104 Rhode Island Ave, NW

How could I end the year without some serious, serious scuttlebutt for ya?!? A few weeks ago we learned that sad news about Grassroots closing. This may lessen the sting a bit, and it’s strictly scuttlebutt at the moment. But I hear bagels (and more) are coming to the space. Many more details coming soon when confirmation is made.
