“Dear PoPville,

I am writing to alert readers of a Peeping Tom in the U Street area. My husband and I live on Willard Street NW and we have a backdoor and back staircase/balcony that goes out to the alley parallel to U Street.

I am embarrassed to say that the presence of the Peeping Tom in this back alley has been known by many neighbors for years now. The Peeping Tom is an African American male, about 50 years old, medium build, and walks with a very distinct limp.

My husband, who has lived in our condo for 10 years, has pointed the PT out to me on several occasions over the past few years (not in the act of peeping, just walking around the alley) About two months ago our neighbor in the building next door alerted us that the evening before he shoo-ed the PT off our balcony–which is majorly creepy because my husband and I were sitting on the couch watching TV the whole evening, so he must have been watching us. We went to the police station and the officer we spoke to said to alert the cops the next time we see the PT in our area, and they will send someone out to question him. The officer said if we could also manage to snap a photo that would be ideal.

Fast forward to Friday night, my husband and I are getting home from dinner at around 10pm. Our neighbor (who shares the balcony with us/also has windows looking out to the balcony) intercepted us in the hallway and told us that about 5 minutes she was watching TV and she saw a man walk by her window and then 5 minutes later she saw a man wearing a big black hood poke his head around the corner and look into her window. At this point she had retreated into her kitchen, and as soon as she saw the man again, she turned on the lights and he ran away.

We called 911 who came out immediately (major props to the cops). The officer searched the area, didn’t find the PT, and we filed a police report. The officer recommended we get video cameras. I’m writing this because our neighbors need to be aware of this, and also because the more people who are on the lookout for this creeper, the better chance we have of catching this guy so he can hopefully stop terrorizing the neighborhood. I am SURE he is peeping in the whole neighborhood, not just the Willard Street alley. Peeping Toms are REALLY hard to catch and I want this guy gone.

update, the Peeping Tom was back last night (Sunday), so we called the cops again, and the cops asked my husband and me to ride around with them looking for the PT. We unfortunately didn’t find him, but is nice to know the police are genuinely trying to help us. In the back of a police car was not how we expected to spend our Sunday night. “

Ed. Note: Perhaps some of our feckless Council Members will start to recognize that we have a serious problem here…

Thanks to a reader for passing on from the Brookland listserv:

“This evening I had a terrible and frightening experience on the red line. I boarded a train at Brookland at about 4:45 PM. A group of approximately 20 high school students (male & female) boarded the same train at NOMA. The group boarded screaming obscenities. They immediately began harassing and terrorizing fellow passengers. They messed with me a bit (took the hat off my head, took videos of me, screamed in my face, etc) and later bothered another gentleman, and eventually a third person which resulted in physical violence. Almost all of the group was involved in the violence- swearing, screaming, kicking and punching, laughing, and again taking pictures and videos. I tried my best to pull some teens off of the man. I couldn’t get off at Union Station because I was blocked in. I eventually got off at Judiciary Square and reported the incident to metro police.

I have lived and worked in Brookland for nearly 16 years. This is the first time I have experienced an incident of this magnitude.”

Readers report:

“I heard about about six shots fired near Sherman circle about 20 minutes ago. Actually took cover. Emergency services on the scene.”

and

“Just got back to our house on the 4800 block of Illinois from a walk in Petworth and heard around 7 shots. Looked out window and saw two guys run west on Decatur and then turn into the alley. Looks like they shot at the house on the 4700 block of Illinois and one person inside was hit. A guy was shoveling out his car immediately adjacent to the shooters and seemed to have dove into the snow.

Nothing to ruin a beautiful post-blizzard day like a Petworth shooting.”

and

“there was a shooting at 4700 block of Illinois on Sherman Circle at about 11:45/noon. One wounded, apparently will be ok. Police on lookout for shooter.

What a freaking way to ruin a snow day, quite the shock while out shoveling to hear and see a shooting.”

A reader reports around midnight:

“My husband, two neighbors, and I were outside shoveling our sidewalks around 11:30 pm on the 200 block of Webster NW. We heard a car with loud music coming slowly towards us and we stopped to look at who would be crazy enough to be riding around in this. We heard a loud pop go off, then another pop as the car passed by my neighbor. As the car rolled towards my husband and me, I saw the passenger point a black gun out the window straight at me, then up into the air and fire. The car just kept rolling down Webster and fired 4 more consecutive shots around the 400 block of Webster. My neighbor said the guy had pointed the gun straight at him too before pointing it up in the air to fire. We were no more than a car length away from the car when he pointed the gun straight at us. Needless to say, we were all in total shock and disbelief that these guys were riding around terrorizing people like this. We called the police and they came by to get out info. All anyone of us saw was that it was a white or silver newer model jeep with a thumping sound system and extremely bright, almost blue, headlights. I know that’s not much, but between the blizzard and the gun pointed at us, we didn’t see much else.

Please let the neighborhood know that this is happening. We were totally caught off guard and didn’t even have time to react until the guy already had the gun pointed straight at us. Hopefully they’ll catch these guys before they seriously injure or kill someone.”

From WMATA:

“Metro Transit Police today arrested a juvenile suspect on Aggravated Assault charges for his role in the December 21 assault aboard a Red Line train at NoMa-Gallaudet Station.

The assault occurred aboard the train as it approached NoMa-Gallaudet Station at approximately 5 p.m. The adult male victim was struck in his face, causing a loss of consciousness and serious injuries that required hospitalization.

The juvenile, whose name cannot be released due to his age, is a 17-year-old resident of Southeast DC.

On January 9, the juvenile was stopped at Gallery Place Station by a Metro Transit Police Officer who noticed that the juvenile appeared to match the image of a person of interest in a BOLO (“be on the lookout”) notice that had been issued to law enforcement officers. When stopped, the juvenile was in possession of a BB gun and was arrested for possession of a prohibited weapon. He was held in custody pending the issuance of a juvenile custody order, which was served today.

The investigation into the assault remains active, and charges against other individuals are possible.”
