Big news from the Tony Kornheiser radio show this morning. They say The Third Edition is closing after tonight in Georgetown at 1218 Wisconsin Ave, NW. Third Edition’s website says:

Since opening its doors in 1969, The Third Edition has been serving Washington, DC locals, tourists and students in the heart of Georgetown for over 34 years. It has become a staple for this historic neighborhood by providing the perfect stop for a quick bite while shopping on weekends to a favorite visiting spot among visiting celebrities and Washington, DC VIPs.

To this day The Third Edition has maintained its original focus on serving seasonal, American comfort food in its signature casual setting. The classic atmosphere with its dark wood paneling, brass rails and green and gold facade is a comforting and familiar sight.

Not only was its main bar feature in the filming of St. Elmo’s Fire, The Third Edition is the perfect accent to Georgetown’s historic charm. You can expect consistent service and quality cuisine upon every visit.

They speculated that the space would become a Mexican restaurant. Guest of Guest reported earlier this month:

“The multi-level bar is currently in talks with Richard Sandoval Restaurants, the Mexican dining powerhouse behind dozens of restaurants across the country, including El Centro and Masa 14 in DC.”

Stay tuned.

1337 Connecticut Avenue, NW

1337 Connecticut Ave, NW is getting two new bar/restaurants. Back in November we learned that The Gryphon will be taking over the former Heritage India space on the first floor. Now comes news – that Kabin will be moving into the former Steve’s Bar Room space upstairs (anyone remember Steve’s?). According to a recent liquor license application Kabin will be a:

“Tavern with a seating capacity of 175 and total occupancy load of 210. Requesting an entertainment endorsement to include dancing.”

1330 U Street, NW

A new tavern called Fainting Goat is coming to the former Urban Essentials space at 1330 U St, NW. In Sept. Urban Essentials moved to 1401 14th Street, NW in the former Reincarnations Furnishings space. A liquor license application has been posted in the old space saying Fainting Goat will be a:

“New tavern serving appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and main courses. Featuring DJ and background music. Occupancy load is 199.”

So – Fainting Goat – greatest bar name in DC?

Girard and Sherman Avenue, NW

A few weeks ago I shared some news that a new restaurant was coming to the long vacant building at the corner of Girard and Sherman Ave, NW. Thanks to a reader I was able to speak with one of the owners – Sam Jahanbeen. Sam was kind enough to share his plans for the space. First of all Sam is the nephew of the owner of Saloon on U Street. And that’s not the only Saloon connection – Sam’s business partner is Kaleabe Getaneh the former bar manager of Saloon.

And like Saloon, The Hilltop Restaurant and Bar will focus on German beer and other imports. But in addition to the focus on beer the duo also plan to offer a solid dining option. Nothing fancy but comfortable “American fare”. The key to Sam is comfort. Unlike the Saloon, The Hilltop Restaurant and Bar will not enforce (love it or hate it) no standing rules. They hope to keep the atmosphere relaxed and a real neighborhood spot.

The restaurant and bar will take over the whole first floor. And in the warmer months there will be an outdoor seating area as well as a window that opens up like El Chucho on 11th Street and Pearl Dive on 14th Street. Lots of updates as construction progresses. Can’t wait for late Spring/early Summer!

Draft Magazine published their list of top 100 beer bars in America:

As craft beer has exploded, so has the number of incredible places that serve it. This list celebrates those special haunts with less than three locations and one passionate focus: beer. There might be darts and a jukebox or candlelight and a turntable; there might be five beers or 500. But in every spot on our list, you’ll find an excellent brew in your glass and people—staff, owners, barflies—who care about that as much as you do.

DC represented by Bier Baron and Churchkey:

THE BIER BARON TAVERN

A Washington institution, this cavernous beer hall and inn (formerly The Brickskeller) in the capital’s Dupont Circle neighborhood is as essential to visit as the Smithsonian: Its exhaustive 550-plus beer list spans brewing history, from ancient gruits to black IPAs and everything in between. 1523 22nd St. NW

CHURCHKEY

Everything beer guru Greg Engert touches turns to gold, but Churchkey remains his crowning achievement: A swanky bar with more beer than D.C. lobbyists, Churchkey’s the spark that started the capital’s craft beer revolution. 1337 14th St. NW

Congrats to Cork Wine Bar on their upcoming five year anniversary! I still remember the excitement of opening weekend back in Feb. 2008. It’s a serious credit to them that they are still as popular today as they were back then.

From a press release:

It was five years ago that Diane Gross and Khalid Pitts brought their vision of a wine bar that paired Old World wines with share plates of delectable food to life along Logan Circle’s 14th Street Corridor. Beginning January 26, Cork Wine Bar will celebrate its fifth anniversary, with a weekend of special wine flights featuring some of Diane and Khalid’s favorite wines, a new brunch cocktail, and a show of appreciation to the loyal guests who have made their wine bar a favored neighborhood gathering spot.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

1141 Connecticut Avenue, NW

From a press release:

The three-level restaurant offers home-style Russian cuisine in a tea party-meets-grandma’s house ambiance. Unlike any other location, the venue features an open-air kitchen, bedecked in red and white tiles and old Russian tchotchkes. Additionally, what sets Mari Vanna DC apart from its four world-wide sister locations is its cozy, third level, private cocktail lounge.

Happy hour will start today at 4pm, with dinner service starting promptly at 5pm. Washingtonians can expect to enjoy a classic Russian menu, featuring items such as; Pirozhok (small Russian pies stuff with meat, cabbage or eggs), Homemade Blinis (Russian style crepes with red caviar and sour cream), the Vinegret salad (refreshing red beets, diced roasted potato, diced roasted carrots, sunflower oil and more), the Salo plate (a traditional assortment of salt cured pork fatback with rye toast, onion and homemade Russian mustard), and the Beef Stroganoff (fillet mignon strips in creamy sauce, served with buckwheat kasha and roasted onions), among others delectable dishes.

For those unfamiliar with the restaurant you can read more about the background of Mari Vanna here. This is the spot where “the interior will be reminiscent of an old-time babushka parlor”.

I was able to attend a preview last night and was blown away by the space – have a look:

For an idea of their menu you can see their NYC menu here. Their DC website is currently under construction.

See tons of photos of all three floors after the jump. (more…)

New Hawk and Dove signage sprouted back in November. Finally comes word (and photos) of their opening from the folks at Capitol Hill Corner:

The Hawk & Dove expects to open on Thursday, January 17, according to manager Jack McAuliffe. The restaurant was originally scheduled to open in February, but moved its debut up, in part, to take advantage of Inauguration traffic. McAuliffe, until recently the general manager at Boxcar, another Xavier Cerveras enterprise, said, “we want to bring a totally different experience to the block – try to do something new with a fun feel.”

The Hawk & Dove will be open at 4:30pm initially (including Inaugural Day) but will start serving lunch on Friday, January 25th.
