science club farewell

Science Club Bar Manager Tony Tescadero writes:

“So yeah, I’ve been at Science for six years or so and concerning our closing…

The Golden Triangle/South Dupont just isn’t the same nightlife hub it used to be. Over the past couple years our happy hours have been solid, a lot of repeat customers, family ya know?
But what happens after happy hour is over? Dupont is flooded with these… I don’t know ‘millennials’… new to the city, and they weren’t really into a place that didn’t play much Top 40 and serve Bud Light.

We played Tribe, Mos Def, Deep House, NuDisco, Groove, tribal melodies, mild trap, break beats.
They wanted Beyoncé and Kesha.

When I first stepped into Science back in 2007, I immediately noticed that this space had no interest in marching to the beat of the nearby bars that catered to frat boys and mainstream stilettoed girls that swarmed the area.

Maybe shame on us for not adapting.
But no, I don’t know.

I was born here, (split being raised between here and The Bronx NY…(COOLIDGE COLTS!))
And it’s very frustrating to see this city kinda lose its identity, or rather its unique sense and become cookie cutter… Copy and paste. (more…)

Last week we reported that Millie and Al’s had begun to sell off their mementos. Today the Washington Business Journal reports:

“On April 7, Millie & Al’s will open early, at 4 p.m., and celebrate to the wee hours before locking the doors of 2440 18th St. NW one last time.”

And the new owner is according to the report: “David Mazza, a co-founder of Taylor Gourmet.”

Updates when we learn more about Mazza’s plans for the space.

chads
5247 Wisconsin Ave, NW via Chads’ Facebook

A reader reports:

“Chad’s/Chadwick’s near Mazza Galleria is for sale. $1M for the name, $1 M for the assets, and of course taking over the lease.”

Updates when/if more info is known/confirmed.

Chads website says:

duffy

From Duffy:

“My Last night at Duffy’s will be Wednesday April 6th. Which is fitting as it also happens to be our Season Opening Nats Viewing Party.

The Nats are on at 7pm and there’s no way I’d rather spend my last night here than hanging out at Duffy’s watching Nats baseball with all of you. So come on by and share a brew or two!

I’m very excited and Happy that we were able to bring Duffy’s back and am grateful to Casey for the opportunity to make it happen and I will be back to visit often. I have thoroughly enjoyed these last 6 months. And I’m so happy that Duffy’s is here to stay.

All my recipes including the wing sauce will remain the same…so you don’t have to worry about losing those great wings

I am very grateful and really overwhelmed by the support all of you have given Duffy’s and myself. ”

‘Twas a bit of a roller coaster ride at times but there is no doubt Duffy has left his mark on U Street/Shaw/DC. Farewell Andy. Enjoy the sun. And go Nats!!

poste
555 8th Street, NW

From Poste Brasserie:

“It’s true! Swing by to say your goodbyes, because we [sadly] will be closing our doors on May 31st!”

The Washington Post reported:

Poste Moderne Brasserie first opened in the Hotel Monaco in Penn Quarter in 2002, housed in the former mail sorting room of a 19th-century post office. It became one of D.C.’s favorite outdoor spots, with a courtyard known for its fire pits and garden…The patio will close April 25, the same day Poste will cease serving weekday lunch.”

Updates when more info about the replacement is released.

The liquor license placard for Village Whiskey says:

“New full-service American restaurant with 62 interior seats. Total Occupancy Load is 148. Rooftop Summer Garden.”

Philly Mag reported:

“The Garces Group is still very much in expansion mode, and Jose Garces announced this week that he’s bringing a Village Whiskey to the Shaw neighborhood of Washington D.C. The bourbon bar will open at 920 N Street Northwest (Rear/Blagden Alley NW). The space will be 4,459 square feet.”

Check out the Philly menus here.

Back in February 2014 Chef Jose Garces opened Rural Society, Argentine Steakhouse, at 1177 15th Street, NW.

First we heard about Sophie’s Cuban and now sad news for next door neighbor Science Club. A reader reports Science Club owner Steve Maguire posted on facebook:

“Cannot even begin to describe the love I have for every kind soul that contributed to this place. Simply speechless. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“And a link to this tune”:

“No other details – just a 100+ comments thanking him for ten years of a great bar! He seems positive in the comments and owns the bar outright, so not sure why this seems so sudden…kind of weird. Hope he comes back with another space!”

Ed. Note: Science Club was one of the coolest spots new spots in the District when they first opened. Can’t believe that was 10 years ago. They will be missed by many.

From an email:

“In addition to the launch of our newest bourbon bottle (picture above), distilleries and breweries were recently approved for later hours. The mayor’s decision is recent, and (we believe) Magnus is the first to take advantage of the new rule and offer the later hours. We will be extending our hours starting this weekend. The new hours are as follows:

Friday: 4:30pm-Midnight
Saturday: Noon-Midnight
Sunday: 11am-7pm

Previously, we were open 5-9 Fri, 1-9 Sat and 1-5 Sunday.

A reader reports:

“I was in Millie and Al’s yesterday and noticed they have price tags on the majority of signs, pictures, and mementos inside. If anyone wants to buy their favorite piece of Millie and Al’s they should head over and check it out. Also, the bartender confirmed they were closing, not too surprising after your post, but definitely depressing.”

Despite protestations the end appears near for yet another Adams Morgan institution. A normally active account since January, they haven’t updated their twitter since February 6th… Updates when more info is known.

In April 2013 to celebrate their 50th Anniversary the owner wrote A Brief History about Original Owner Al Shapiro – definitely worth a read if you missed it.
