I got some really sweet scuttlebutt from a pretty reliable source yesterday. They hear one of the restaurant spaces for City Market at O will be filled by the folks behind Mintwood Place in Adams Morgan. You can see Mintwood’s menu here. Mintwood Place was recently named best new restaurant at the 2013 RAMMY Awards.

Another reliable source says that they hear one of the restaurant spots could be taken by Top Chef season 7 winner Kevin Sbraga:

“a New Jersey native and winner of Bravo’s, Top Chef (season 7) Washington D.C. By September 2011, he became the chef-owner of Sbraga, a modern American restaurant on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia.”

You can see Sbraga’s menu here.

It’s not clear if there is room for both of these restaurants or only one. Looking forward to learning more! Updates when new info becomes available.

We previously have heard that another restaurant from the owners of Taylor Gourmet (though not necessarily a Taylor Gourmet Deli) would be coming to the former Mid City Deli space at the corner of 14th and P St, NW. A permit had been applied for under the name Taylor Gourmet. We learned this back in Dec. 2012. Now a very good source tells me that he hears a Dolcezza Gelato and coffee shop could actually be taking over the space instead. I’m trying to get confirmation from Dolcezza and will update when I hear back from them.

Yesterday we checked out The apartments at CityCenter and learned that a Tumi store was the first confirmed retailer. In the comments some interesting news came out – specifically a UNIQLO is coming according to this job listing:

“UNIQLO Manager Candidate Program – Retail Sales – new

Company: UNIQLO
Location: Washington, DC

Date Posted: October 21, 2013

UNIQLO is seeking Experienced Store Manager Candidates! At UNIQLO we are seeking individuals who are committed to becoming business leaders in the retail industry. Our ambition is to open 10 – 20 stores annually in the United States and become the #1 Specialty Apparel Retailer. With over 1,200 stores globally, together we believe we can change the world!”

Yes!!!

But in less exciting scuttlebutt is word that the Apple deal may have fallen through. A commenter hears a Gucci store could be taking that space. I haven’t heard that but another source also tells me that he hears Apple has walked. Hopefully they can resurrect that deal because I think an Apple store would do very well there. More info when/if it becomes available.

More big news for the 14th Street corridor. I hear from a very good source that the owners of Federal and Palace5ive (2216 14th St, NW) are opening a neighborhood tavern in the former Dynasty Ethiopian Restaurant space. The space is located right between Piola and JUDY restaurant just south of Florida Ave. Word is that it will be a very chill spot with beer in cans. More info when it becomes available.

I hear the owners of Ripple are opening up a new spot in Adams Morgan. Ripple is located at 3417 Connecticut Ave, NW. Ripple is delicious. This is very good news for Adams Morgan. The Reef closed for good back in late August.

While the owners of Ripple haven’t confirmed the exact location, I am told that it will be a new concept, different from Ripple. More info on plans for the new space as they become available.

Update from Ripple:

“The team behind ripple – including Executive Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley – is planning to open another restaurant in the next 6 months and is currently looking at several locations.

“There are no finalized plans yet, we will have an announcement when we can be more specific.” Roger Marmet

Ben’s Chili Bowl just celebrated their 55th anniversary on U Street and work has started on a second location on H Street to be located on the corner of 10th and H St, NE. Now comes word that a third location could be in the works.
‏@toddkliman tweeted the scuttlebutt on Friday:

“Inside dope for #DCrestaurant fans: I’m hearing that the new occupant of the original Ray’s the Steaks space will be Ben’s Chili Bowl.”

The original Ray’s the Steaks was located at 1725 Wilson Blvd in Arlington, VA.

Yes! Work has finally started at the former Y.E.S.S.S. Uniforms space in Bloomingdale. And some scuttlebutt I’m hearing is starting off 5774 very sweetly indeed. This is pretty prime space located down the block from Rustik, around the corner from Red Hen, across the street from Showtime and in between Grassroots Bakery and Boundary Stone. I’m hearing it is going to become a Tex-Mex restaurant and there could be some connection from the owners of Sticky Rice. Think Tex-Mex would be a good addition to the burgeoning dining scene in Bloomingdale?

Back in April we learned that the Blue Banana had closed at 3632 Georgia Avenue, NW by DC Reynolds and Looking Glass Lounge just south of the Petworth metro. More scuttlebutt has come on in on the new management team. I hear the new team comes from the folks behind the Mason Inn in Glover Park, the Capitale nightclub on K Street and the George club in Georgetown. This scuttlebutt comes from two different sources who are both very confident in what they heard. One also hears that the new space will be called the Petworth Patio. Stay tuned.

Brookland is blowing up. There really is no debate anymore – it is. I’ve heard tons of scuttlebutt over the past few months and many from folks in the know with a high degree of certainty. One of the most exciting is that Whole Foods is apparently pretty much a done deal. If half of the scuttlebutt I’ve heard is true, I’d expect many more (big and small) announcements about Brookland in the near future too…
