Thanks to Daniel for sending:
“Pollo Granjero, Columbia and Ontario NW is emptying out – no tables and chairs. Is something new coming?”
We judged them back in 2009 to less than stellar reviews but with the new hotel and restaurant coming nearby this could be a pretty prime spot – updates when we learn more.

Thanks to a reader for sending. Check out their menu here. Quickway’s website says:
“healthy, tasty alternative?
Here at Quickway Japanese Hibachi, you’ll find fresh, quality food, served fast, with style.
It’s how we have grown from one prototype store to 7 locations, and counting, within 20 months, in the DC metro area.
So, how do we do it?
We bring the Teppanyaki (teppan, Japanese for griddle; yaki, grill, broiled) cooking technique to a quick service restaurant setting. The proteins are prepared fresh on the open grill in your full view, a true cooked to order signature dish.
We offer choices of salads, sides, and sushi, all prepared from All Day Fresh™ ingredients and homemade sauces.
Plus, we really care if you have a cool place to eat. We build our space to be clean, convenient and modern.
Of course, our food is healthy, with reduced salt, no trans fat, and no MSG.
And yeah, all this in a value package.
So if you are looking for freakin’ good food, with quick, quality service, then welcome and enjoy!”

Ed. Note: This is the former Senor Chicken space that a commenter said was becoming a Ethiopian Restaurant back in January.
From a press release:

Thanks to Jim for sending:
“Looks like a new @jimmyjohns coming to 14+U between McDonalds and DC Noodles”
This is the former 24 Seven Mediterranean Restaurant that closed in 2012 and moved to 15th and U St, NW. They are now The Mediterranean Spot. The founder and CEO of Jimmy’s Johns is a controversial figure to say the least…

From a press release:
“The latest restaurant group to join Washington, DC’s thriving Shaw neighborhood, Cava Grill is thrilled to announce a fall 2016 opening in Shaw’s hip epicenter at The Shay building. The 2,500 square foot space will place focus on the local community with art and lifestyle events hosted throughout the year. Cava Grill’s Shaw location will make 20 locations by fall, with eight coming this year including Silver Spring, Dupont Circle, four Northern Virginia locations and a second location in Los Angeles, CA.
Cava Grill’s new Shaw location will feature the restaurant’s signature health-conscious fast-casual Mediterranean fare and afresh look, with an expanded open-kitchen layout; local beer and wine on tap; new menu items including seasonal vegetables roasted in Cava’s new stone-fired ovens, and rotating seasonal soups, juices, and teas made in-house daily; deeper relationships with local partners like Whisked!, Gordy’s Pickle Jar, and RunningByrd Tea; and additional community initiatives representative of Cava’s commitment to innovation, evolution, and attentiveness within fast-casual dining.”

Back in February we learned that the restaurant, Royal Blue, would not be coming to 3113 14th Street across the street from the DC USA mall.
Well, Chipotle has signed a letter of intent to take over the spot and details are being worked out with the lease. I’m not sure when they’ll be able to open but hopefully in a few months. I think this is great news. I seem to recall there are lots of Chipotle fans out there. I know the Chipotle in Woodley Park always seems to be crowded. So what do you guys think – do you like the addition of Chipotle to Columbia Heights? Man, I can’t hide it, I’m pretty psyched!
UPDATE: This location will be serving beer.
