Yesterday we spoke about those continuing to have difficulty getting DMV appointments.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“This week, the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) extended the time residents have to renew expired driver licenses and identification (ID) cards to September 9, 2021. The previously announced deadline was July 1, 2021. This action, as well as other changes DC DMV is making, will give residents more time to renew driver licenses and other ID cards that require an in-person appointment at a DMV Service Center.

This announcement does NOT impact the enforcement of valid inspections and vehicle registrations that took effect on June 1, 2021.

In-person service at all DC DMV service centers, adjudication services, and the Deanwood CDL Office is still by appointment only. DC DMV will continue to offer more appointments and other options to ensure all residents have a chance to be in compliance with their credentials before the September 9, 2021 deadline. Is there any news about the D.C. DMV’s opening up or adding more appointments? We have been trying to get an appointment at ANY/ALL of the service centers and there appear to be no available appointments for a new driver’s license in the year of our lord 2021. Tips?”

I’m a DC resident with the car registered in DC with a clean title. I’m selling it on facebook marketplace and already have a bunch of prospective offers. I figured I’d take off the license plates but how do I legally transfer the title and registration to the new owner? Anyone have any insight?”

“I can’t legally drive it unless it gets inspected by the DMV, Is this right?”

“Dear PoPville,

I have a bit of a complicated situation (related to the DMV) that I could use some help with. I moved to DC in May with my car. Due to the stress of the DMV and lack of available appointments, I have not changed my car’s registration over from my home state of NC yet. In January I was in an accident and my car was declared a total loss by the insurance agency, despite it only being minor damage. Fast forward to now and my car is finally fixed, but from what I understand I can’t legally drive it unless it gets inspected by the DMV. Is this right? (more…)

“Does anyone know why I’m getting these emails if expiration dates have been extended?”

“Dear PoPville,

Question for readers re: vehicle inspection/registration. Our inspection/registration expired in April 2020. At the time DC DMV extended expiration dates until the public health emergency ends. The DMV website indicates that continues to be the case for all DLs, IDs, registrations, inspections, etc. expiring 3/1/20 to 3/17/21. (more…)
