“Dear PoPville,

Question for readers re: vehicle inspection/registration. Our inspection/registration expired in April 2020. At the time DC DMV extended expiration dates until the public health emergency ends. The DMV website indicates that continues to be the case for all DLs, IDs, registrations, inspections, etc. expiring 3/1/20 to 3/17/21. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

This text comes from an email I just got from DC DMV reminding me to renew my vehicle registration.

Also, the cost of Residential Parking Permit (RPP) will increase effective March 1, 2021. Any registration with RPP renewed after March 1, 2021 will be subject to the new fees.

New annual RPP Fees per household are: 1st Vehicle–$50, 2nd Vehicle–$75, 3rd Vehicle–$100, and $150 for each vehicle thereafter.  Also, one senior RPP per household for $35.

“Dear PoPville,

With all the posts about how hard it is to get an appointment at the DC DMV, I had to share that you can register your car without going to the DMV!

Back in November, I bought a used car from an auto shop in Maryland who could not process DC tags. I haven’t owned a car since living in DC, so I had to go to the DMV to get tags before I could take it off the lot. Like many readers, getting an appointment was IMPOSSIBLE.

So I did some digging and learned that you can title/register/tag/etc. your car at tag and title shops in the area. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping your readers can help me out. I’m a current DC resident with a car registered in DC. I’m in the process of trading in my car and purchasing a used car from a dealer out of state. The DC DMV requires an in person visit to register a new or used vehicle. As we’ve all realized, the DMV is appointment only and when I last checked there were no appointments available through April 2021. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

I moved to DC for a job a few years ago, and I continued to use my parents’ address to pseudo-maintain my residency in my purple home state, not knowing if I’d stay in DC long-term. Well, I have! Coming up on the general election, I want to vote legally in the place I live and pay taxes, despite how angry it makes me to not have real congressional representation here.

I decided the best way to make this overdue and official residency change was to get my driver’s license switched to DC, which includes an automatic voter registration (but you still have to opt-in for organ donation…).

Here’s the problem: there are no open appointments at any DC DMV until December 24. Read More

Ed. Note: We spoke about a similar situation in the beginning of June but things appears to have worsened as I continue to get many queries similar to the one below.

“Dear PoPville,

My partner recently purchased a used motorcycle from an individual and is now trying to get it registered. DC DMV is saying they are operating on an appointment only basis, but appointments are not available until December. We called 311 and connected us to the DMV who informed us our only options are to make sure to park the vehicle not on a public road and to keep checking the system for canceled appointments. Thanks to John for passing on: “I know there have been lots of questions about registration and such at the DMV. This DMV update also includes a letter to take with you when traveling outside DC and show you are still compliant. DC DMV Credential Extension Update
