I’m hoping your readers can help me out. I’m a current DC resident with a car registered in DC. I’m in the process of trading in my car and purchasing a used car from a dealer out of state. The DC DMV requires an in person visit to register a new or used vehicle. “Dear PoPville,
I moved to DC for a job a few years ago, and I continued to use my parents’ address to pseudo-maintain my residency in my purple home state, not knowing if I’d stay in DC long-term. Well, I have! Coming up on the general election, I want to vote legally in the place I live and pay taxes, despite how angry it makes me to not have real congressional representation here.
I decided the best way to make this overdue and official residency change was to get my driver’s license switched to DC, which includes an automatic voter registration (but you still have to opt-in for organ donation…).
Here’s the problem: there are no open appointments at any DC DMV until December 24. (more…)
Ed. Note: We spoke about a similar situation in the beginning of June but things appears to have worsened as I continue to get many queries similar to the one below.

My partner recently purchased a used motorcycle from an individual and is now trying to get it registered. DC DMV is saying they are operating on an appointment only basis, but appointments are not available until December. We called 311 and connected us to the DMV who informed us our only options are to make sure to park the vehicle not on a public road and to keep checking the system for canceled appointments. (more…)

“Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the DC Department of Motor Vehicle (DC DMV) will resume in-person services beginning Tuesday, June 23, 2020 as part of Phase Two. The public will be required to make appointments for most DC DMV services as the District continues efforts to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“My partner lives in AdMo, and I live Glover Park, and use a visitor’s parking permit when the car is there. I usually have 0 issues, but for a period of several months in 2019 I received at least a dozen tickets on the same stretch of Calvert Street by I think the same officer. I was cited for several things, none of them accurate, including illegal spot, no permit, no visible registration sticker, etc. My car is registered, with plate and sticker, in the District. (more…)
“Dear PoPville,
I live in Ward 1 and am in the processing of purchasing my vehicle that is at the end of its lease. I have not changed my out of state plates since moving here because it was leased through another state. Once the title transfers over from the dealership to my name, I intend to switch my plates, registration, and license to DC.
I was recently self quarantining with my girlfriend, who lives in Ward 4, and received a parking violation for having out of state plates and registration. The officer that wrote the violation – who coincidentally lives in her apartment building – first took note of my car in March and recently gave me a violation at the end of April. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I am having THE WORST time with my surrendered license plate. After surrendering, my husband dropped the actual plate at FT Totten Transfer station to be shredded like the DMV website said, this was in November and December 2018. In April 2019 I started getting tickets on my old plate, which I surrendered. It is up to 900 dollars in fines already. (more…)
