DC Government

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey DeWitt announced that the deadline for taxpayers to file and pay their 2019 District of Columbia individual and fiduciary income tax returns (D-40, D-41, and D-40B), partnership tax returns (D-65), and franchise tax returns (D-20, D-30) is extended to July 15, 2020. This means taxpayers will have an additional 90 days to file and pay from the original deadline of April 15, 2020.

The Internal Revenue Service has also extended the federal filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2020.

The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) encourages taxpayers who are able to file their returns electronically to do so. For additional information, please contact OTR’s Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4TAX (4829).”

Logan Circle

“Dear PoPville,

Logan Circle Laundromat Closed! I was already very anxious about using the laundromat in these times, but it’s a difficult situation here on out for those of us without a washer and dryer. Anyone have sanitary and reasonably priced solutions while we deal with this temporary development?” (more…)

Pets

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share a little light in this hard time. My apartment looks out to an alley with another building on the other side. This morning, I saw a note taped to my neighbor’s window. It’s hard to read, but we think it says “Dear cat across the alley, thanks for being cute!” Of course, Midge said thank you. Right now, it’s the little things that mean so much!”

Fundraiser

“Dear PoPville,

Sam the man Burns passed away on March 7. He was such a cornerstone of DC. There is an official GoFundMe here. There has already been a private service for his family, but there will be celebratory events after it’s safe to gather, I’m sure. Here’s something I wrote. -Courtney”

Sam. The. Man. Burns.
What can I say about you that hasn’t already been said? I know everyone you left in your powerful wake is praying that wherever you are grants you the same healing, magic and salvation you gave to us when you were behind the decks. You were an idol, a god, a mentor, a friend, a force, a man. I am not going to pretend like I knew you better than I did, but I will share 3 lessons that came from you. (more…)

Thanks to Maggie for sending:

“I saw your article on the DC Virtual Tip Jar, and have been looking for something like this all week! My partner and I paired the spreadsheet with a randomizer, so that anytime we grab a drink from the fridge (or a meal) we can tip a restaurant worker at random.

I wanted to share with you, although there’s no css/styling yet as I’m not a developer. Works great though!”

UPDATE: a Virtual Tip Jar for Salon/Spa/Tattooers, etc.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out today as my compatriots and I at the barbershop have been discussing our futures through this uncertain time.

Our shop has been closed now since March 7th to do our part as citizens to curtail this virus. While we still retain our jobs at this time, many of us in the (Beauty) Industry have not been so lucky. Just like the much of the service/restaurant industry, we do not get paid unless we are working, having hands in hair, and as one might imagine this comes with risks to ourselves, our families, our clients, the city et al. Unemployment would amount to a fraction of a fraction as far as we are considered.

We feel we have not seen our industry represented besides the other areas of Service in the media. We have seen wonderful apps materialize such as Virtual Tip Jar, But there is no spreadsheet cell for Salon/Barbershop/Stylist. There has been much outreach to the restaurant community and they still have walk-ins stocked and product to move. Though their solution may be short lived, they have skills on which they can pivot. We are rooting for their success! Outside of doing house calls, which may be our one saving grace (though still comes at great risk) we have no export beyond our touch. (more…)
